Satin Black Paint

The 72 Duster is in for paint and the body guy is having difficulty getting a premixed paint or a formula for a VOC matte/satin paint. Any suggestions on a formula? No he has not done this before and yes he is a really good body/paint guy.Because we live in a rural community there is not a lot of choice and difficult to have paint shipped. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!
 
The sho nuff stuff Chrysler used has a particular name.....I forget what it is, but it ain't cheap. I would follow that thar advice up thar....^^^^^^^
 
You wouldn't know the formula, ie; ratio of flattening agent to paint? He is unsure and the flattening agent is very expensive.
 
Have you tried the gloss and 3000 wet sand. Does it look close to a mattt/satin finish. Sorry I usually spray bomb everything!!!
 
You could try researching "organosol black". That's what Mopar called it.
 
Go to Auto body toolmart and buy a gallon of Kirker Matt Clear for about $100. Paint it black, then clear it. It will be much more durable than a flat paint.
 
Performance Car Graphics sold the paint by the quart a few years ago. about $200 if I can remember

they are in Florida and make the best stripe kits

It works very well if correctly sanded and has some benefits that you can't get with a regular mat finish.

1st. Given time most mat finishes look like hell. With this technique you have real UV protection and can re-sand with 3000, 4000 or whatever to renew the finish.

2nd. If you get tired of the satin, you can buff and polish it out to gloss black.


One more hint. If you like Black, never have Black mixed. Just buy black mixing base in the brand you want. This will save you a butt load of money.
 
I used PPG black and put the flattening agent in the clear just for the hood and shaker as the gloss threw too much of a reflection at me Most all body shops have a formula for at least 3 different effects of flat, matt and satin. Took photo in the rain, sorry..

I'm trying to see the pinstripes. Old eyes I guess :)

Some folks use the black epoxy primer from SPI. Its not as good as a clearcoat but they do add a UV stablizer for this purpose.
 
If you're trying to mix paint I am guessing you want to paint something as big as a hood. For smaller parts that can be spray can painted I agree with hemitheus.
John Deere has some great black paints in a can. tmm

That's funny! You're serious right?
I've actually been thinking of doing a satin black Demon with some kind of gloss black striping.
