Aloha! Getting close to the install of the new engine in my 66 barracuda. I have a local exhaust dealer that said they would do the dual exhaust and I asked them to install an "H crossover" there question back to me was....

HOW FAR BACK DO WE INSTALL THE "H" CROSSOVER?

so....EXPERTS!!!!

How far back on the 66 barracuda do I tell them to install the H crossover?

Mahalo!!!

Some say it's a measurement, others say place it for convenience, the most creative answer I've heard is painting the exhaust white, taking it for a spirited run, then putting the h-pipe where the paint that hasn't burned off begins.

I'd say put it for convenience, there is only so much room as an option under there. The fact that it's there is more important than exacting placement.

Aloha!

Mahalo Poison!

I thought it was April 1st at first...white paint???! haha...but I guess that makes sense? I've got the trans-mount cut for dual...thinking behind that? I saw TTI's drawing on line...may just hand it to them and...Say MAKE IT WORK!!!!

Yeah, if you've gone to the trouble of cutting the mount, your already invested in the idea of making it easy for the trans to come out. I'd think that the solid route to take is keep with the idea your on. Hit the thanks button if I've helped!

Enjoy!

Bull hockey. Put it back far enough that you don't have to de-exhaust the frikkin thing to get the transmission out if you ever need to. You'll never feel the difference on the street with where you put it.

..from mopar performance manual.about 12 - 14" behind collector.
says it will reduce noise but doesn't increase power,

Yeah. Right under the transmission. PITA.

LOL!!! Looks like behind the trans-mount makes the most sense.

Mahalo guys!!!

Adding an H-pipe will make far more difference than where you put it. As others have said, right under the tranny pan probably wouldn't be the best spot.

Are you sold on dual exhaust & will you be running headers? If not more than mildly modded engine and still using stock manifolds the hi-po single exhaust y-pipe is a very nice piece and great alternative to duals. Can just get y-pipe & have rest of system fabbed to your liking or go with entire original setup including resonator.

Single exhaust IMO is the better way to go on a small cube motor, headers or not. ...but the OP asked about duals. I like single exhaust on small cube motors because you can really build a great scavenging system. That's how I'm doing my 318 in my truck. 2.5" pipes off the headers into a flowmaster "Y" and then into a single 3" pipe. It works well.

Toughest part for exhaust on an early-a body is right around the torsion bar area, as you can see on that pdf from tti you posted a link to. Passenger side especially, and you can see how its all squigly in the drawing. Do you have a 90 degree oil filter adapter? What exhaust manifolds are you using? I used to use some shorty oil filter adapters, and have a few left I think, after I went to the 90 degree oil filter adapter

If you are set on duals as other posters have commented, does not really matter for performance where H is placed. Definitely consider trans. clearance issues. My 65 cuda has a custom fabricated H-pipe dual system. H-pipe feeds off of fenderwell header,s & the H is right past collectors putting location just to rear of trans cross-member. I race my cuda occasionally and as Scamp stated did not want to deal with total exhaust removal if trans had to come out so this just leaves a little tail shaft over h-pipe. Went extra mile on mine and added flex section as the H so it could be removed. Setup works awesome but my 340 is also seriously modded. Have had tranny out three times with no exhaust removal which saves a boatload of time.

Lou3500 that is a super clean setup. Mine is very similar. Got any sound clips? How close is your exhaust to the gas tank? Couldnt tell in the pics.

The exhaust places I have chked pretty much all said to put an X or H pipe either one as far back as is reasonable for trans access and driveline clearance.
As I looked into it, there were a lot of systems that had the X type just behind the trans.
The main thing an X or H do is to dampen the exhaust noise by breaking up the sonic reverberation that builds in a single pipe, so it really does not matter where they are in the system.

I have a 66 with stock manifolds stock engine no x/h pipe magnaflow magnapacks 2 1/4 pipe bumped up to 2 1/2 at mufflers and tips sounds awsome did not notice any performance loss.

Lou, that looks real nice. Any chance for a video clip so we can hear how those mufflers sound?

It does look real nice, doesn't it?

Mahalo GUY!

Its a 273 .30 over with isky E4 cam. Doug's headers. Its not installed yet. I already had the crossmember notched. I was going to go Dual just because it seems logical if she can breath easier she'll run better/easier. Like the idea of flex at the H pipe...Now I'm stumped. Single? Dual? dang it! She isn't being built to scream. Just a good running cruiser.

Great install..seen those pictures before...Mahalo!

I'll get a sound clip my sons girl has an i phone i'll have her help me. Thank you for the comments,i can stick my hand between the pipes and tank with room to move [looks closer than it is] i wanted flowmaster 10 series single chamber muffs but this guy talked me into these they sound just like the old round thrush glasspacks but not as rappy. My request to him was i wanted a muffler who's sound would make small children cry and he delivered, however the interior sound level is quite intence at lower rpms quiets down at higher rpms, i'm not sure exactly how loud it is [due to being half deaf aircraft/race car mechanic what are ear plugs] i have a ram dually with a 4 inch straight pipe turbo to tip and i'm told it's ungodly loud but with my hearing it sound mildly loud.

I really think you'd feel the difference from duals to single on that one if you did it. Here's the Y I am using on mine.

You can see how well it will scavenge. From 340 on up, they get big enough to benefit from dual exhaust. At least, that's been my experience and the experience I have gathered from others over the years.

SS...call me slow...so you think I'll be happier with headers into a single pipe? Can you take any pictures of your set up? I'm fine with a single exhaust...but to me it seemed counter productive of headers.

as we all want to do...I just want to do that right thing....the FIRST TIME!

I can't take pictures of MY exhaust, because it's not there yet, but two of my friend Rodney's trucks are setup like that. I'll get you some pics of his. I'm not trying to talk you into something else. Just letting you know there are other options that might benefit small cube torque down low. That is what moves the car, after all.
