Gas sending unit removal/install tool?

-
yeah- what he said. I used a combination of channel locls and a cheap 1/4 extension with a hammer. I bought a new sending unit lock ring and gasket from advance auto for about $6. Just be patient and work WITH it. Took me about 3 minutes to get it out-of course tank was out of car.

I used the tapping it with a screwdriver very lightly. It is a lot easier when tank is out of the car.

I must confess, I used an old screwdriver to tap on the tabs when I did mine. You need to use all the tabs to keep the ring centered especially when going back on. tmm

flathead and hammer is plenty good imo. They come out rather easy

No tool required, tap it with a hammer and screw driver as said earlier to make it loose then the rest my hand. I can't count how many I have done this way... A / B and C bodies.
Save your money and buy a tool you can really use.

I always use a flat head screw driver and a hammer, ill lightly tap sideways on one of the tabs then do the same on the opposite tab to avoid binding, repeat until it spins off. Its easy. Just used this method last week on the duster

I use a screwdriver and hammer. I wrap the metal part of screwdriver in a t shirt....no sparks.

Use a brass drift and/or hammer to tap the ring.
You don't want sparks.

That's what I do, brass = no sparks = no boom! Sparks and gas fumes don't mix well IMO.

The only difficulty in doing it this way is getting the stupid ring to stay centered when you're putting it back in.

The other advantage of a brass punch is that a flathead screwdriver can shear off the tabs if they are badly rusted.

Only way to do it!! haaaa , Air Chisel right?? haaa

Yeah I forgot the word "air".
I'm glad you caught that ...... it's very important to give out proper information when dealing with something that can explode or catch on fire.

You forgot the use of a Bic lighter as a trouble light.LOL:glasses7:

Seriously though. Just about any tool in your box will assist you in getting the sending unit out. When putting it back on I always put a thin kiss of White Lithium Grease on the both sides of the Gasket so when you put it back on the gasket don't move around and it seals the first time with no issues.

I have a great wood handle, narrow cleaning brush that I use the handle to tap with a hammer...works sweet every time and no potential for sparks. Everything has to earn it's keep in my tool box :)

I hope Moparlee didn't use a torch and a air chisel. He hasn't responded since he started this thread. Hope he's not laying in a burn unit somewhere. LOL
Lee are you there?

Ya, sorry guys. I've done like you guys have said over the years and thought it was pain when I done it. I ended up buying one on ebay for chump change.....sent to the door for $15.00. I haven't got it yet, but I'll post the good or bad. Haven't ran it out of gas yet.

I do appreciate your feed back guys.

I'm having issues with my motor now. It's not looking good.
