I'm at that point (Head job vs New Motor)

Look great, nothing like a good "head job". LMFAO

Just updating the thread with some recent progress. Amazing what can get done when I have some beers and order some movies to keep my daughter to be occupied.

I still need to replace all of the freeze plugs just to be safe. It has been taking awhile but I've put everything through the ultrasonic cleaner and torquing everything down carefully and methodically.

It's looking good, what did you have to do to install the intake on 64-65 heads ?

Originally I thought that a Prev Owner had hogged out the intake holes to get the right angle for the older style heads.

But after taking it off and researching some other member's experiences it looks like these heads are in fact the 64'-65' heads with the 66+ bolt angles so it had no fitting issues..

Having the heads milled offset the intake bolt holes too much and now going to get the intake milled to fit. Anyone have experience with doing that?

Yes, mine was way out as the deck had been milled and I'm using offset head dowels so the head bolts line up properly. I fitted the intake without gaskets and that slightly over-corrected the problem. They were .060" gaskets so I had the intake milled .050", which lined up the ports perfectly.

The only issue for the machinist is getting the intake level before the first cut as the carb pad being angled doesn't help.

Well, the Wife is back from deployment and I got a "Dad night" to put the engine back in. Everything went in easy for once!

Well tomorrow is the big day. I hope I got everything tightened down and ready to go.
Wish me luck! (With my experience I'll need it)

Bill, try to prime the carb so you have some pump shot before firing the engine. Pharmacy may have those kids liquid medicine syringes. I use those a lot to fill bowls on carbs.

That way when it fires there is fuel in the carb ready to meter and you aren't cranking the starter which may be tough on a fresh camshaft.

Will do, thanks. I have several of those syringes laying around.

Ha! Jokes........ Everything went well so far. At initial start up I ran it for about 40 minutes at a high idle (Guessing 1500-2000rpm) then dialed it down. By ear, 35 BTDC seems close for now. I still need to dial in the lash and carb. I expected it to get really hot but it stayed relatively cool.
