Bill, try to prime the carb so you have some pump shot before firing the engine. Pharmacy may have those kids liquid medicine syringes. I use those a lot to fill bowls on carbs.
That way when it fires there is fuel in the carb ready to meter and you aren't cranking the starter which may be tough on a fresh camshaft.
