Axle studs-stock length or 3"

What is the main reason for the 3" long studs? I need to order new axles for my 8.75 and would like to know which ones to order. Why would you order 3" studs? I'm sure I am missing something, but I want to make sure. Thanks.

If you intend to race it someday, go with the 3". I have them on mine right now and they do look a little funny with the stock Rallyes, but Oh well.
