You sure you are not confusing STARTER RING GEAR with "flywheel" and "flex plate?"
You could never get the TQ on/off the engine if the TQ was welded to the flex plate!!!
Automatic cars do not HAVE a "flywheel." The flex plate:
bolts on where the FLYWHEEL in a stick car would be, but the TQ provides the MASS that would "be" the flywheel.
