I hate the new Dodge Dart

-
Im sure the Swinger edition is in the works. Maybe GT or GTS. I think its cool. Face it, if they built a Dart like the old ones, no one in their right mind would buy one.

I believe there is a GTS model already available.

To quote the initial words in the first post : I hate it, I feel so betrayed and insulted.

Did you feel betrayed and insulted during the 20 years of the past when Chrysler strictly built front wheel drive cars and if not, which daily driver automobiles did you and your family own during the 80's ?

The dart is a small economy car sadly they used a musclecar name for a non-musclecar... I happen to have an old dart and I'm only 12
btw I'm putting a 383 mated to a 727 in it this winter should be a 450hp engine!

As far as retro vehicles go the new Challengers and the new Mustangs are sharp as they can be. If I was going to buy a new car for myself it would be one of the two! I wouldn't even consider the Charger or the Camaro ( the only chebbie I've ever owned was a Nova my brother gave me ). Just for conversation sake I'll add that the new Dart might look a hell of a lot better in person than on a web site. But for what I saw, I'll say again. I liked the taillights!

The truth of it is, the original intent for the Dart was not muscle car.. it was cheap transportation.. thats why the Dart was the cheapest (and lowest) in the Dodge line.. What wound up working in its favor is the fact that it was the era of the muscle car.. it was compact (for the day) and light... put a big motor in a light car, you have fast and all kinds of fun... but that was then and this is now.. times are differant, insurance rates are differant, fuel prices are way differant... in short, everythings differant.. despite the 'retros' from the big 3, there is no muscle car era or war going on like back in the day... so the Dart is once again, cheaper, fuel efficient, compact, transportation... you just cant 'retro' everything.. wouldnt sell enough to make it worth it

Yes it was intended as cheap transportation... but they at least they later had a V-8 option and didn't look like pretty much every other car.
Honestly I think that it is basically a replacement for the Neon (hopefully it's not a lemon like the neon was)

a side from the 80,000 mile head gasket, neons were not lemons. I don't think you're old enough to remember Neons. LOL

I like the new dart and it's about time they re introduced a car in the market to go heads up with the Ford Focus. I think they will sell a lot of 'em.....they better.
Remember when the slant six was introduced?
It was cutting edge technology for the time, and the wave of the future for 6 cylinders.
Like it or not, the new Dart is here to stay, at least it goes back to it's roots like the new Challenger does. Cheap reliable transportation is what the new Dart is and nothing more. A throw away car just like the original. The new Challenger is a sporty looking cheap car. I wish i could say that about the new Charger, but it is a decent car too, i know a few people that own them and they like them.
Why are people afraid of new technology?
The cars built today are better, safer, better fuel economy, handle and brake better, more comfortable, and cheaper than the old ones.
People whined about the new technology in the '60s and '70s too, with the new fangled electronic ignition, radial tires, disc brakes, pcv valves, and automatic chokes.
My Dad was one of them, and i heard constant belly acheing from him until he drove a new '70 340 4 speed Swinger. He couldn't believe the power and handling it had compared to his 429 cubic inch '66 Cadillac. He almost bought it, but he couldn't get the deal he wanted. He still didn't like the ''pollution crap'' on the Swinger, but at least it had points ignition and bias ply tires on it.
So there you go, old school versus new school and somewhere in between.
I remember the base slant 6 a-bodies of the '70s being cheap affordable transportation with lousy 9'' brakes and no power. They had lousy uncomfortable seats, and crappy heaters.
The new Dart today even if it's an Alfa Romeo knock off is MILES ahead of the old base Darts even in it's base form.
Compare what a dollar bought you in say 1967, the price would be about the same.
I love the older styling of the '60s and '70s cars, and that's why i stick with them, but comparing them with the new cars is unrealistic.
I might buy one and trade my '07 Focus in on it when the R/T becomes available. That should be roughly like the Swinger 340 of old.

i think they should quit ruining these cool names with p.o.s. cars....4 door charger, dart, duster in late 80s early 90s...even the challenger looks dookey with base wheel/tires....

Dodge Dart America's 1st Fine Economy Car

One could say the entire A body series, paid no homage to the original Dart... What design cues from the '60 Dart carried over into our A bodies besides the Unibody construction?
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!:prayer:

Why doesn't anybody else recongnize that fact?!? :banghead:

So if they called it some new original name, all you guys would just stop caring right?

I think it's got some pretty cool design features and I've read some road test reports on Allpar.com, seems like a good small car if I ever look into getting something that new. Only problem, it looks like a friggin' bar of soap just like every other new non-retro car. That style got old with me real fast...

I'm going to buy one for my wife!!!!!!! Who's got a comment on that!!!!! Tell me what other choices are to stay with mopar?????????

Life must be damned good if you're biggest complaint is what some dumbass somewhere named a damned car...

I'm going to buy one for my wife!!!!!!! Who's got a comment on that!!!!! Tell me what other choices are to stay with mopar????????? Ya know, in 1973 the Dart was considered a compact car....what is it today compact or sub-compact. Doesn't matter anyway...this is 2012/2013 not 1973, the retro look styling is going to fade sooner than later. Why not just use the names. My only gripe was the Charger was made to a 4 door.

I would have been completely fine with it IF they had made an SRT4 option. the turbo model is on a fiat based engine so it doesnt count. Maybe after all the negative feed back dodge will get from this car they'll produce an SRT4 model next year. *fingers crossed*

hell, What would a SWINGER package be? 2.4 with bumped up HP, re-defined shifts in trans, wood grained accents in interior, special wheels, classic emblems, and a bee stripe?

My buddy and I went and saw It, Drove It,...Unimpressed by the performance and the price,...not cheap,...But not a terrible car,...and remember this is 2012, not 1972,...

Sadly, the cars we really like and drool at on this site will never, ever be produced again, period. Get over It. Move on to the 21st century already,...Ya'll are gonna have to get used to the idea that todays cars are all just like what we all made fun of in the 70's when we looked at artist scetches in car mags back then. Ugly little jelly beans.

My (our)next new car will prolly be a Silverado anyway, (thats what Momma wants),...I'll keep waiting for a "real" Dodge for myself,...That means No Fiats in pentastar clothing, and no imatation stick/autosticks/ half sticks, etc,... In the meantime I'll just keep wrenchin on what I got, cause I don't see anything out there today that I'd buy for myself...

I bet it has more pep than the original Dart did back in '63. And it gets better mileage. Dodge has to make an economical car to keep up, and why not name it after their original "economy car?"

Fuel economy is killing Chrysler because they can't compete in their class with any of the other manufacturers. I was glad to see they were finally able to invest some money in a higher efficiency motor. I know it is a modification to a Fiat motor, but take what you can get.

I saw a few last week at the dealership and really liked them. I didn't drive one since I'm not in the market, but from a looks standpoint, it is a nice compact car and is reported to get up to 39 mpg on the highway. The base model didn't look to be too expensive in today's market and I hope they sell.
