How big of a press do I need for pressing wheel studs in/out? Money is tight, so even though I'm sure I'll use it for other things, I don't want to buy one that's too much more than I need for this specific job.

Will a 6-ton work, or should I step up to a 12-ton? Bigger?

well after i bought my press for one job, ive found to use it MANY times for a million other stuff....i say get the biggest one you can afford...

Don't need a press for wheel studs, just bang the old ones out and use washers and a nut to pull the new ones in.

You don't need a press for wheel studs, but having a press at your disposal is really nice to have. I bought the 12 ton from harbor freight and I use it more than I ever thought I would.

I highly suggest the biggest one you can afford that harbor freight sells. I had a twelve ton from them and a friend bent the shaft on it because he wasn't smart enough to remove a snap ring on a wheel bearing. For their prices bigger would have to be best and it won't take up much more room!

As the others said you don't need a press to remove wheel studs. I've knocked them out with a claw hammer but a 2 or 3 lb. sledge makes it easier. Just put a socket larger than the studs head underneath the flange so your concentrating the force in the area right around the stud, not all over the axle flange. Hopefully that makes sense. If not I can post a pic. If you want a press and this is an excuse to get one (works evey time for me with the Mrs., LOL) don't get anything smaller than a 12 ton cause I guarantee you'll find other uses for it that'll require more power. If you can afford it go for the 20 ton. That's what I have and love it. Not much it won't press apart.
