1965 Dodge Dart Charger

-
Great news! 69cudaman sold me a set of "W" stamped door strikers. Now alll the parts for the doors are there.

I'm still looking for the air cleaner base. Help is very much appriciated.

Under the distributor between the engine and the transmission is a clip holding the wire for the neutral safety switch. Does anyone have a picture on how yours looks?

Inside the prop.shaft tunnel is a rubber mount to prevent something. What is it for and can it be bought NOS? I have restored the bolt but the rubber mount is in bad condition.

I'm trying to do a manual for the painter. I wonder if someone has a picture of the black paint behind the grille looked like? I know how they did it when they came to Sweden but how did it looked in US? What I know the reason was simply so everything behind the grille was black. No exterior paint.

O found a cool advertising from January of 1965. Sorry for the bad quality. If someone know where to get old copies of magazines I would be grateful.

We have discussed the rear resonator earlier in this thread. Today I got more infor from one guy who bought one of these cars new. According to him the stainless steel end was not there. He knows that for sure the 66 and 67 cars had them and possible some very late 65s.

Does anyone out there have any input if the tip was just black?

If so (check my pictures) the tip hadn't the same contour as they had when they came with the stainless steel tip!

The ad was from Valley News.

We have owned 4 of these, 2 NOS ones, a new take-off and a used one. Also seen many others, never seen one with a black tip. Maybe the dealer took it off or painted it black to hide the tip? Maybe the end cover fell off? Even all the factory photo's I have seen they had the stainless tip.

I'm not sure either! What to do?

This ad I found from October of 1964.

Keith! I talked with him last night he was convinced after I sent him the pictures. The stainless steel tips were there when new! But I have heard so many people tell me about the black exhaust tip!!!

BUT, I got to know how the front two clamps looked like for the exhaust system!!

After some searching I found this picture in an old "Rodding&Restyling". Check out the resonator tip. To me it seems black!

Any input?

Those 273 4barrel Hi Po, a body motors were the coolest thing around back then. The resonator tip was shiny stainless, not black, and you could hear someone with their foot in it blocks away.

Here is a great picture of the total Barracuda Formula S package. Check out the exhaust system and especially the resonator. From what I can see it's black! I found these pictures in the March issue of Hot Rod magazine from 1965.

WOuld it be possible that they did a mid-year change on the tip from black to stainless steel? I know the old President of the WPC Club also told me that the resonator tips were black.

There is a wetherstrip on top of the cowl. I have two unrestored cars and they both have them in two ways.

Which way is correct?

After searching the internet this is what I came up with. But was it painted from the beginning or was the steel black from the start?

Or better up, does anyone know one of these black resonators for sale?

Ulf, Could it be that Plymouth used the black ones and Dodge used the stainless? It looks like most of the info you have about the black ones are related to the Barracuda allthough the Dart photo looks like it has a black one. It could be a production change also. Often times the magazine cars and articles use pre-production cars. Just a thought. tmm

tmm! Re the picture I posted I think too that the resonator were black. But if you check the picture closely you'll see the DPCD logotype as well as the date code 11-64!! The resonators I have do not have a date code. I will shot some pictures later and post them up.

Re the production change. I think you are right tmm! The big issue would be to find out when they changed it!!!!

I took some pictures today. I found some interesting stuff!

First of all the first picture shows the both NOS resonators. The left one is NOS Chrysler and the right one is Mopar Multi Purpose Line resonator. The NOS one have the partnumber but not the DPCD markings. The Mopar muilti unit has no partnumber at all.It just says INLET.

If you compare with the black resonator pictured earlier the resonator has the DPCD logotype and the date code. Just like assembly line correct mufflers.

Check out the original box. It is stamped with 7-72 so my guess is that the resonator was produced July of 1972. I checked with an old box I had too. That resonator is on my convertible now. It has the same stamped 7-72. The vendors code 10832 can be found both on the resonator and the box.

The "silver" resonator is aluminised. The "black" one is zinc-coated (galvanised). Mufflers were available in both varieties through Mopar for most applications right from the start; as particular applications grew older and demand dropped, often the more expensive aluminised unit would be dropped and only the cheaper galvanised option would remain (or mufflers previously available only as aluminised would be downgraded to galvanised) to compete with the non-Mopar aftermarket muffler offerings on price.

Dan, it looks like there's only 1 resonator listed and that's the #2660 445.

Yes, there's only one resonator listed and it's the #2660 445. Please read the comments I posted, not just the clip I posted from the FPC:

Dan! Would the black resonator be made with black steel from the beginning or was it painted afterwards? I'm not sure cause I haven't seen a black one. Honestly I didn't know about it at all!!

I think you are right regarding the muffler. I never thought about it but after checking the resonator, the box and the numbers you hit the spot.

So now the big issue is if the resonator was painted or produced with black steel from the beginning? Any help is greatly appriciated.
