trailer hitch for a early dart

-
Every company that made them likely quit making them 20 years ago. I 2nd the "make one" post. Make sure to mount it solid sound frame rail. Make sure your suspension is up to snuff as well.

I just pulled this off my 1965 Dart earlier today. The previous owners had it put on to hitch up a motorcycle trailer. Don't know anything about how much weight it can handle. It was attached to the frame back by the rear license plate. It's 2 separate pieces.

I have one in my garage I pulled from a 64 valiant. it looks somewhat similar to glenns. These things wont pull much weight at all. Making one and connecting it to the frame is your best option.

JC Whitney used to sell one years ago for a 64 Valiant where you took off the rear bumper and then replaced the two inner bumper brackets with ones in the kit that had tabs welded to them. The hitch then bolted across the inner bumper brackets. The bumper got reinstalled and two little brackets went up to the license plate light holes in the bumper which helped to keep the hitch from flexing.

thats what i was figuering i was just hoping for the easy way out lol i was thinking two thick(3/8 inch) pieces of seel to the subframe and then mount it with the bumper support bolts too... oh well guess its back to welding for me lol thank you guys for the pictures and ideas

The entire car is not rated for much trailer LOL. I think my 67 was rated for total trailer wt. of 2000 lbs.

Go down to the you haul trailer store and they will set you up . Been awhile but I think they still do it

The one that 53ryder posted is considered a Class 1 with a tongue weight of 100# and trailer weight of 1000#. A Class 2 would tie into the subframe and to the bumper and have a tongue weight of 200# and trailer weight of 2000#. Now whether the car could handle it is another question. tmm

Not A-body, but I put a class 2 trailer hitch on my 65 Newport. I bolted it to the frame rails (insides). You might do the same on your Dart. Not much clearance between the rails and gas tank for it, but fit with a few shims. It had a telescoping square cross-bar with various holes to set the width. Bought at Walmart or such ~1996. Maybe by Valley. It looks rugged, so not sure why it has the little 1.25" square receiver, but it is fairly hidden ~4" behind the bumper. I mostly use it for a bike rack or other accessories.

If you bolt it to your frame rails you run the risk of collasping the rails. Every chrysler trans mount bolted around the crossmember of the car and they used steel pipes inside the crossmember to prevent crushing the crossmember.

A's have a square plastic cover in the trunk that allows access to the innards of the rear frame rails, at least my 65 does. You might either fish a bolt thru so you clamp only one side of the rail, or insert a steel tube for a thru bolt support. For fishing, you can wrap a thin steel wire around the bolt threads to feed it thru. Many trailer kits come with that. I didn't use an innard tube on my Newport, but have large square nuts on the outside that spread the clamping force to the edges of the rail.

I did a little searching here awhile ago and found a post stating that a jeep hitch will fit. Poster said measure between the frame rails of the car and head to the local you pull.

i have i off of a 65 barracuda looks just like the 1 in the pics if all else fall thru or any body else needs 1 its yours but at least pay for the shipping i'm just gonna keep it around tilli ripp myself open on it then it goes in the junk lol

I had a dealer installed hitch like the one above on my 66 dart when I bought it. Mine bolted to the bottom of the spare tire holder . I put a metal plate in the bottom of the tire carrier holder to male it stronger. I pulled my drag bike/trailer for I guess three with no problem. Ive got a parts car a 65 dart that has a stronger hitch. Ill try to get a picture and post it on here. I think it bolts to the frame. Ill check it out and get a photo on here if I can. Ill go look at it now.

I had to read this thread as I still marvel that my father used to pull another car (Tow bar) and multiple U-Haul trailers with just the "clamp on chain -types" U-Haul had back in the day behind our '66 wagon. Now I look at mine, identical to his with just those puny bumper bolts holding the whole thing on! Heck, you can twist the bumper by hand! Amazing.

Good Luck Travi, I think its great your using your car for that and enjoying it.
