I've been useing VR1, none Synthetic in my 408 stroker, with an zinc aditive.
I've heard Brad Penn 20-50 is a great oil for flat tappet motors like mine.
Brad penn oil is a blend oil with synthetic aditives. I've heard sometimes full synthetics sometimes find oil leaks that were not issues with mineral based oils. I have over 1000 miles on the motor. Is it worth changing oils?

Anyone gone this route

BradPenn- made-re3fined in Bradford Pennsylvania- hence the name. I think it is the same as valvoline or havoline. Cant remember.

I use Bradd Penn exclusively...even the breakin oil for My new motor...My opinion is it's the best

I use Brad Penn in both my Darts. Both cars get 10w-30.

It's a necessity:thumbrig:

hi, the brad penn is the old green kendal oil. its a very good oil, i use 10-40 in my 340 motor. its still the green color. its worth it.

They make it at the old Kendall refinery in the Pittsburgh Pa area. Talked to the owners at the sema show and they are a great bunch of guys with a very good product.Well respected in the performance circles.

I use it in my cars,I thinks its the best.Their straight weight race oils have no synthetics in them.

i was using the 20/50 in the slant but here in PHX there are only a couple of places that carry it anywhere near me so i switched to VR1 20/50. i would prefere penn but its not as available which is a real downer... VR1 is everywhere and has everything you need without an additive...

I had some shipped from a distributor in Missouri. Now there's a parts store here in town that's selling it. I'm thinking that Summit and Jeg's are now selling Brad Penn.

This is no longer true. VR1 used to have a high zinc formula, but it doesn't anymore. Check the rating on the bottle!

I use Brad Penn in my stuff, still has the right stuff in it without needing additives.

So the standard Valvoline VR1 in the silver bottle is no longer good? Now we gotta add a zinc additive to it?

I,m still running Brad Penn, but have thought about changing to something cheaper than $75 a case of 12 liter.Anybody have any good things to say about the Mobil 1 ??

If Brad Penn works well and nobody has had issues, then stick with it.Why take a chance on cheaping out and maybe have a problem.Good oil for your motor is like good shoes for your feet! You get what you pay for.I use Z-Alt and think it's great.$50.00 a season is worth it! Just my 2 cents.. lol..

Exactly. Who cares what it costs when we have thousands invested in our engines. I've been using Brad Penn OIL for a few years in my Demon 340. No problems at all. :headbang:

Wylde1.

I used the Penn break in oil when i fired my engine for first time and broke in the solid lifter cam. It made it thru the break in and will be the only oil the engine see's for the rest of its life. I would pay $20 a quart knowing it would keep my cam from wiping a lobe.

As I understand it, yes. This popped up on another site somewhere and I checked it out. "SL" rated oils have high levels of zinc like needed for flat tappet cams, "SM" rated oils do not have high levels of zinc. Check you bottle of VR1, I think you will find that its rated "SM". Mine are.

This is off the net about the API ratings for zinc in oil (its in the little circle on the label on the back of the bottle):

"SM-grade oil will have less than 600PPM (parts per million)of zinc, while SL-grade oil will have about 1100PPM of zinc. Higher viscosity SL oils (10W40, 15W40, 20W50) have a higher level of zinc at about 1200-1300PPM."

With haveing 3 cars and 1 being drivin WOT most of the time it,s running,I do about 7 oil changes per season between the 3.I was hoping someone had a cheaper alternative with the same ingredients. This way I could save for new shoes.:-\"
