Thinking of doing a gearset swap in my 904 trans, then dropping to a 2.94 (?) rear from a 3.23. The arithmatic says the first gear multiplication would be nearly the same with about a 10% reduction of engine speed in high. I want to confirm that I would need the low and second gear sets in the AMC ratio's and everything else should swap over?
Any one know what the OD ratio of a non-electric A-500 OD trans. would be?
Bob

if you dropping your rear gears to 2.94 or less, the low or wide ratio planetarys will definaly help you out. the stockers are 245:1 for first and 145:1 for second. the wide ratio is 274 and 154. all a-500 and 518 are electrical to some point. its just the '96 and newer you want to avoid.

I believe you need the sun gear that the front planetary slips onto as well as the front planetary gearset and that's it. I'm not real familiar with 904's/999's like I am with 727's but in 76 (and again in 90) 727's changed the spline angle on the front planetaries so you have to mate them with the correct output shaft. Maybe Zijmer would know if 904's are like 727's in that respect? I'm not positive but think the o.d. ratio of a A500/A518 is .70

hey there, iam not 100% sure if the 904's have that spline issue. i don't have any at the moment to check. the o/d ratio is .69
