2015 SRT Barracuda- who is saving up for one?

I'll be the first to argue that cars from 1964-1970s were just about perfect. Styling, size, driving pleasure...all unbeatable. But for those of you guys comparing the money you would spend on a 2015 Barracuda versus a classic...I think this is a mistake and that these cars should be kept seperate. We own them for different purposes.

If you insist on comparing, tthere are a few things to consider:

Practicality- Modern muscle car can be driven every day, like they were intended...not sealed away in a garage like an exotic car. New Muscle machines have a warranty, run fine on today's crappy gasoline, will get 25+mpg, and still make you grin like an idiot on your daily commute. Even my 318 Dart (a utilitarian/cheap car in its day) is far too inefficient to drive on a daily basis and far too precious to me to leave unattended in a parking lot all day.

Performance- No classic will keep up with a modern car. Stock versus stock, the average current gen SS Camaro beats a 440+6 Roadrunner on slicks, an average Mustang GT spanks a Hemi Roadrunner and each does it on less than half the fuel. Yes, you can cram a forced induction/big block into anything and run crazy times but you'll have a one of a kind freak of nature...which is a great thing but it certainly loses utility as a car. Plus, if so inclined, you can also cram a blower onto any of the current gen (some of which even include a warranty).

Handling- I LOVE the way an old torsion bar Mopar handles. They're predicable and relatively well balanced and still incredibly comfortable...but let's be honest; a modern Corolla would have been a super car in 1967 and my Mustang drives like a space ship compared to the Dart. No joke. As soon as the road deviates from straight, the performance of modern cars blows away the classics.

Braking- while you can make arguments that engine tech has made huge leaps, brakes have made and even bigger leap. Modern cars stop hard and do it again and again and again without fade. The brakes on my Brembo Brake Package Mustang are insanely good...not even considering the ABS thing.

Safety- no need to go into this here...but I'd much rather put my wife and kids (if I had either) into a 2012 Challenger than a 1970...your consideration of this factor may vary.

Most importantly- Actually buying one- Maybe you guys are all great with your cash and have $20,000- $40,000 sitting around, waiting to be spent on a toy but I'd bet that most of us A-Body guys are not in that boat. Meanwhile, you can finance a new muscle car and justify/rationalize the purchase since it will be getting your butt to work and back. :D It also helps that they hold their resale value better than the average car so you don't get hammered when you trade it in.

So the right answer is to have one of each. Buy a classic Barracuda to tinker with and drive on the weekends, buy a modern one to drive to work! :D
