Hey, other than looks, is there any advantage to running 3 inch pipes over the axles for a mild 383 (less than 500 hp)? Gonna replace the old POS tailpipes on my Dart (currently 318 ) and thinking about going up to 3 inch, since its only a few bucks more when I order the pipes from TTI.

Opinions, anyone..??

No need on a mild 383. Like you said other than looks, just over kill. And less clearance more chance of rattles. Friend has a 67 R/T that had 3'' exhaust,He changed it to 2 1/2'' because of tail pipe interference. Car actually ran better.

I had a 71 Challenger mild 440 stock heads 284-484 hyd cam holley street dominator 750 vac carb auto 3500 stall 3.91 gears 9x28 slicks. It had crappy 3 inch to flowmasters then 2 1/2 tail pipes. It ran low 12s 12.20-12.30. Running tail pipes or removing made no difference I even tried 3 inch tail pipes no change. open header with 9 inch collector ext, ran 11.90. 2 1/2 is perfect also it just gets louder with 3 inch.

most say that 3" with 2 1/2" tail pipes are better. the exhaust cools and the smaller pipe keeps the gasses moving better.

I donnnooo, Joe I have trouble rapping my head around this. IF this is true, then why do open headers work? Why would we not restrict them "down some" and with more length? And yes, I do know about header extensions, and I know about the "old school" way of checking them for temperature.

When I first put my challenger together I ran the hooker 2 inch chassis headers. big mistake with that low comp stock head engine. no bottom end, switched to 1 7/8 headers and it picked up a ran great. It dosent matter Im just given my experience.

my car ran exactly the same at the track through the full exhaust as it did with the cut outs open..

go with 2and a half inch. 3 is overkill . and as mentioned by another member clearance problems will be more evident with the larger diameter pipes. :D

I had 2 1/2 on my Dart with both the 318 and the 408. The 2 1/2 made a rapping sound and low speeds that drove me nuts. My brother said it sounded like a Chevy. I went 3" and added an H pipe. It sounds so nice and no rapping.

I have 3" with an X-pipe and Borla Pro-XS mufflers on a mild 440. It is free flowing and loud. Nice and muffled at idle but loud at speed. I like it but, I seem to get mixed comments on it.
