Chrome O-ring Water Neck (Thermostat Housing)

Ok, my LD340 intake is flat- no recess for the thermostat. My new o-ring water neck is also flat- no recess. Do I have to buy a new waterneck or should it seal ok? I'm using a stock thermostat. Anyone with any experience on these?
 
I would Strongly suggest staying away from chrome on a aluminum intake. Her is a pic of my chrome water neck that came off my LD340 intake after about 5000 miles. Started getting a coolant leak and couldnt figure out why until it left me stranded after I thought I got it fix. Replaced it with a factory one and havnt had a probley since and it's been 4 years. Chrome wont get you home.

Yeah chrome sucks, get a billet one from mancini racing and ask them which one they recommend for your app.

Everyone I know that used chrome got let down by a major leak sooner than later.
 
i put my housing in the lathe turned the thickness of the stat off the inside lip still had enough lip for the o ring put it on not very tight just snug and no leaks i used the smaller mopar stat this is the only way i could get a stat to work with the chrome neck

Kim's right, it won't work. It has to have a recess in either the intake or thermostat housing for the thermostat to sit in. Summit has a nice billet aluminum one for about $40.

Use some of the Permatex Right Stuff gasket maker with no paper gasket and you will be good to go on those chrome or billet aluminum water necks.
 
Eric that's got a lot of bling and I mean no disrespect but I have a hard time understanding why you'd use messy gasket sealer and a gasket when an O-ring is better. If you need to take it apart you don't have a mess to clean up and most of the time re-install it with the old O-ring. That's also not the point of the OP's question.

Clarification...That top unit is a Mancini Racing billet aluminum unit. It has the provisions for a thermostat. The OP needs to throw the one he has in the trash. Others said chrome sucks. The Right Stuff is good with no paper gasket as before mentioned. You use a thin 1/8" line of it then wipe the excess off when you torque it down. The bottom of the cool view unit was custom made for a Mopar thermostat.
 
OK Eric, understood.

Here's my take on the chrome housings. I have ran 3 of them and the first one leaked within 500 miles. After I took it off I noticed the O-ring they sent with it was not the right size. It was too narrow and when tightened down and heat cycled a few times it flattened out completely loosing it's seal. I found an o-ring that actually fit the o-ring groove properly and put it on and never had any more problems. On the other 2 I used I inspected them before ever installing them and installed a O-ring that fit the groove and never had any sealing problems with either of them even after taking them apart and putting them back together a few times. The only negative other than that was how the chrome doesn't stay on them good. The last one I just took off my car had less than 5000 miles on it and the chrome was already checked. I like stuff to look nice and work good so I now use only billet housings with the correct O-ring but IMHO there's no reason a chrome housing won't work good (if it's the proper housing) and last a good long life if installed properly which means using the correctly sized O-ring and not over tightening it.

If you want to get a good one try this one. I bought this exact one and it is nice and heavy with a 1/2 inch thick flange. It also has the groove cut in it for the t-stat. Contact CudaCHick1968, she has mine so she can powder coat it. Here are a few actual pics of the one I got. For $11.50 you really can't go wrong. It doesn't have an o-ring but I think it might be hard to find an o-ring one with a groove for the t-stat.

for the chrome dont waste you r money on them

hade of them diferent company and they all leaks
last spring I bought an oring style from
billet specialities ran all summer few trip
at the track no more leaks

by a good oring style not a paper gasket or
all kind of gasket you wan they all leaks

if its not today it will be tomorow

Any pics of it on the car, running? Pretty neat.

It's called a Cool View unit. It is a one off prototype made for me to test. I gave the guy crap for avertising it as cheby stuff and he made one for a Mopar stat in the bottom. I will come back and share when I get it on and tested. You can google Cool View and you will get his website. I doubt it has been updated for what I have. With his units the thermostat goes up top.

I would stick a gold fish in the clear part, just for shows only. You would have to run straight water without antifreeze so you could see him and not kill him with the glycol... :laughing:

Or maybe one of those blue and red Beta fishes.... :cherry:

Thanks Dusted 72, I just bought a LD340 intake off craigslist and it didn't have the T-housing. I like em so much I bought 2, I know I will use the extra 1 sooner or later....
 
i went down to orieally for my houseing and it was aluminum nicely built and very nice installation i didnt know they used aluminum my dad thought it was a 440 source housing i said no it was ten bucks and worked thats all i know

While it is cool, it is too much for me to fork over.
 
I don't know,call me crazy,but a $7 cast parts house unit always worked for me.
Just like the factory used.
 
Take the chrome one, go to the river and toss it in the river.

Next.....

Go home, clean and polish your original.


If you deviate at all from the above instructions, you are doing it wrong.
 
Since this has been re-visited I determined that I could not use the cool-view unit on mine because it would block the a/c compressor. So if someone want's it cheap PM me.
