Hey guys, I don't know if this thread already exists. i apologize if it does.

But I'm hoping to go drag racing for the first time in a month or so and I'd love to run a 13 second pass.

My combo is as follows

1967 VC Valiant Regal.

318 +0.030"
340 crank
Standard rods
KB399 dome top pistons.
915 J heads 2.02"/1.6" Lightly bowl blended.
Comp Thumpr Camshaft 227/241 @ 0.050" .486"/.473"
10.4:1 compression
Edelbrock Performer RPM. (not air gap)
Edelbrock 650 AVS
Cast manifolds from 318. Twin 2" system with X pipe.

Built 904 TF
Transgo II shift kit
3500 Stall
3.7:1 Rear Gears LSD (suregrip)
235/60R14 street tires. (25" tall)

Do you think this combo is capable of 13's?
I'd like to hear your 13 sec combo for comparison.

I'm sure there must be a few around who have run or now run 13's in the past!
 
Getting off the line with street tires is not easy. If your 60 foot times can get close to 2 seconds you will be in the 13's with your combo.
 
I don't think there is a 13 sec thread. I started the sticky threads above in the racers forum. I did t include a 13 sec. Because I really did t see a need, but second guess that now.
IMO, it should have been done more so for the smaller engines. The 273/318.
It is a little harder to get them to run the times due to the lack of cubes and popularity in getting them done to perform.

A typical 340 only needs a decent gear to get into the 13's.
A typical 360 would need a cam in addition. Headers a plus for both engines.

But a 318 would require a little more thought and parts since 99% of them came with a 2bbl. Carb.

Looking At your combo, I'm not totally sure your going to get 13's in the ET. The first thing that hits me is the 2 inch pipe and probably the lack of headers.
(Extractors for your neck of the woods right?)
Otherwise, I do know the cars weight or its transfer abilty.
Oh, and what he said above me. Tires! Street tires have a hard time hooking up at the track.

My combo will run 13.5 all day long.
Stock 318 with bolt-on`s.

Currently building a 360 that should be down around 11.60.
 
My purestock 74 360 duster runs 13.8's@100 at will and has run 13.78 a couple times.
.030 360 with 8.8:1 compression.
stock 587 heads
stock intake
stock 850 TQ
stock exhaust manifolds with 2 1/2 headpipes,dynomax mufflers, and 2 1/4 tailpipes
727 coulumn shift
8 1/4 rear with 3.55 sure grip
3500 pounds with me in it and full tank of fuel
215/70/14 goodyear radials

I know a 318 isn't a 340 but mine's specifically identical or superior to a factory 340 in every way except the bore diameter.

I have purchased some custom 4-into-1 headers that are 1-3/4 down to a 3" collector but they go underneath the draglink which is a concern for ground clearance.

They are a tight fit and require a little bit of work to get them to fit because our steering box and column are on the same side as the engine is offset to. :banghead:

The reason why I've decided to run street tires is because it's a 100% street legal car and I want to know how quick it is in street legal trim.
 
To run 13's is not all that hard. I ran 13.92 at 98+ mph in my 65 Barracuda with a 318 and bolt on's. Here's the combo:

65 Barracuda, full interior, all steel, 318 with 273 heads, cut .030, 1.88, 1.6 valves, Crane Blazer cam, Eddy Performer intake, 3310 Holley, Thorley "D" Dart headers, 8 3/4 with 3.55 gears, 215/65x14 tires, MP 166K torque converter, a non-discript 904 with a reverse manual valve body, pieces of uni-strut hose clamped to the front segment of the rear springs to stiffen them up. It wasn't even a sorted out combination; it was my second 1/4 mile run ever; first run went 14.98 at 98+mph(driver error). No changes first to second run. 60 foot times were 2.1 sec zone.

13's on a stock cam that's awesome!

Seth the more I look at your combo the more it seems like a freak of nature.

If your 215 tire can hook to run 13.8 then My 235 tire might have a fair chance too.

These are top stuff, really motivating.

I just looked up and the factory weight of my car with the V8 is 2972lb

So I'm gonna estimate 3300lb max with my own 180lb and things like bigger radiator, trans cooler, wider alloy rims and tires, twin exhaust etc

Yes I'm running the stock cam degreed at 112.
I think I had a 1.89 60 foot time at Stanton,MI but I would have to look at my slips.
Another interesting thing with my car is it seems to like being shifted at 5000 rpm.Might try some 3.92 gears next year.I am not a super tuner by any means and firmly believe almost anybody could duplicate my cars perfomance.There are NO TRICKS!
 
My ex Valiant -65 2door goes whit 318cid+b&m 174 blower 13.3sec 168km/h .. ... 215/60-14 stock tires = spinning wheels
 
My 70 340 Dart. stock pistons, bottom end, intake and exhaust manifolds, carter avs and duel point. The ONLY non stock part on the motor was the camshaft, it was a crane ecopower with a 470-ish lift. 4 speed and a 3:91 gear, the car ran mid 13's all day long with the best of a 12.98. 1986-1990 I race the car fairly often at Englishtown and at Atco at the Musclecar nationals.
 
1972 Dart, 3460 or so with me in it, 1972 360 stock short block with new rings and bearings (in 1987), Crane 224/232 @ .050, .460/.450 cam, windage tray, 72' J heads with stock valve job and pocket porting/gasket matching by me, LD340 750 DP, Hedman 1 5/8 headers, 3-chamber Flowmasters, 904 w/ T/A 2900 stall, 8 3/4 with 3.23 non-sure grip, 235-60/15 tires, 13.62@100 with a 2.1 60' time.
 
68 barracuda, 340 .30, 292 purple shaft cam, M1, holley carb, X heads. 2500 stall 3.91 gears but crap tires. 12 second combo but not without better tires. (stock wheels)
 
1967 dart with 1968 b-body 318, stock 100k+ miles on it. eddy performer intake, 650 carb and performer camshaft. steel shim head gaskets, exhaust manifolds into 2 1/2 exhaust dumped at the rear. 3.55 gear with 245/60/14 bfg t/a radials. 904 with 3000 stall ati converter. car was 3400lbs with me in it. went 13.78 at 101. 1.84 60ft tiimes. only car i owned at the time. beat the piss out of it every day. drove it for 4yrs and sold it for 900 bucks. lol.

I was just thinking about this subject and Ppow! here it is! I am on the fence whether to rebuild My 273 2bbl, or go the crate motor route. 273 needs a complete rebuild. Can a 273 in a 67 barracuda get into the 13's and still be tame enough for the street?
 
Early 90s built a 1972 Ozzy Charger, full street car, worn out 360, low comp, cast iron 340 avs manifold with 600 vac, 1.88" J's, triys, worn out purple shaft Hemi grind 280 x.470", stock rockers etc, 727, stock station wagon converter, 4.1 suregrip, 245 retreads, 2 1/2 exhaust, took it to the drags once, had one run then parked it for the day...ran 13.60 @ 101, full exhaust, full street gear, std tyres etc etc...could have gone faster but didnt bother.
Beat most cars on the street (back then), ricers didnt exist then!! :).
Still got the engine, sold the car unfortunately.
 
Sureshot43; A lot of this is what your willing to live with on the street and not. The smaller engine will require a bit more cam, gear and converter than a larger engine would. Exactly what it takes to run a 13 in a 273 housed in a street trim car or a stripped down racer is an unknown to me.

There's no 273 builds in here?
 
360 engine stone stock except, blueprint compression to 8.5. This cam: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/crn-693801/overview/make/dodge, matching springs on stock unported j heads with stock valves. Stock 71 340 iron intake. Thermoquad, headers and MP electronig ignition. Stock rockers and pushrods. Good for 13.90s in a 67-72 Dart with 3.23 gears and 13.40s with 4.10 gears and slicks. Ask me how I know.
 
My old Aussie Charger in the late 90s was a high 13sec car. It was a basic combo. It had a 360 with 8.5:1 TRW forged pistons, ported 2.02 cast iron J heads, a small 218@50 .458lift cam, 780 vac sec carb, Torker intake, 3000rpm converter, 3.5gears. It ran 13.9 @ 99mph. It was a very basic combo and it ran full exhaust, street tyres and pump fuel. Later I bolted on a B&M low blower to it and ran 12.7 @ 108mph with the same combo (except a stock converter).
