Just picked up a 68 Barracuda and was having trouble fueling the car at the gas pumps. With modern cars, you set the pump and the fuel shuts off when the tank is full. However with the Barracuda, I can get about 15 seconds of fuel and the stupid pump resets...this occurs over and over again until the tank is finally full.:banghead: I'm pretty sure it has to do with the stupid vapor recovery system that we use here in Ca. I suppose I can try to override the recovery system by creating a gap between the pump and the filler neck and see if that works. If that doesn't work, does anyone have another solution to this problem or is it something I have to suffer through every time I'm at the pump.
Thanks

Don't have that problem with my 68 cuda, for me its the stupid pump won't shut off when the tank is full and I end up getting gas all down the side of my quarter panel, it really pisses me off when this happens.

maybe pulling the hose out just a little.Oddly I have a 97 and a 2000 ram and the with the 97 I can shove the gun in and fill with out any issues but the 2000 I have to pull the gun out about an inch or so or it will shut off like you are saying yours does.Just a thought.

I can't let go of the pump handle when I fuel my Duster or my Challenger, the vapor recovery system keeps the nozzle from locking in, so you can't lock the handle and walk away. Works fine if you stand there and fuel it yourself, but you have to keep pressure on the vapor recovery system by holding the nozzle during fueling. Minor annoyance, still beats the crap out of driving some new plastic POS.

Try pumping it a little slower, like mentioned above try keeping it out a little.

I agree.

I have to fill my 68 Barracuda manually and hold the pump lever the whole time.

Around here in So Cal (all California?) we have special nozzles with heavily sprung bellows that push heavily against the filler neck. The hooking part of the pump nozzle will not hook hard enough to overcome the bellows pushing against the filler neck.

I was in Las Vegas last week and they have different nozzles. I think most of the U.S. have them like that.

We have the same spring-loaded vapor recovery nozzles in Sacramento. Not sure about all of CA. I recall having them in Atlanta too, but maybe I have been here too long. It should fill if you push the spring in. I fill up a gas can for my lawn-mower that way. I have read that they cut off when they sense pressure from the back-flow of air out of the filler tube. Can't explain the physics of how that increases as gas reaches the filler tube since you have the same fluid inflow displacing air all the time. I thought the main problem with our pre-"no lead" big filler tubes is that today's pumps don't sense enough back pressure and tend to overflow, as 72bluNblu experiences.

funny, i had an 03 passat and it had the same issue
for some reason it occured more at certain gas stations that others

maybe you can find a pump that isnt ran but a chebby guy ;)

Slow and steady at most pumps if they throw 2 gallons in 20 seconds
These new pumps pump out much more then they use to.. enjoy

So let me see if I got this... When sticking your nozzle in with a sucking device attached, you can only go 15 seconds before popping off...:poke:

For me it's the same as abodyjoe. On my Valiant I flip the nozzle over so the hose is at the top and it cured 2 problems, clicking off during flow and puking gas on the quarter panel when full.Just a thought.

JW...You are amazing. You made me realize that maybe I'm going about this all wrong. My last ride always liked it deeper..so by default, I thought my current ride would be the same. But through your infinite wisdom, I started thinking? Maybe I should give my new ride "Just the tip" and see how that works out. :prayer:

Unlike the rest of the advice you've received, I'm betting that your vent tube is blocked.

So I'm thinking about what you said about the vent tube and I decide to go outside and take a peek down the filler tube with a small flashlight..and low and behold..I see something stuck half way down the pipe? Apparently my fish swallowed a foreign object. I go into my closet and make a small hook out of a wire coat hangar and fish this out.
Anyone know what it is? It doesn't appear to be anything automotive but I could be wrong.

I have same problem no block vents just replaced gas tank and went through system. My 07 charger rt does it at different stations around the state. Mostly when I travel to LA.

Welcome to the 70's. Looks like an anti-siphon device of some sort. Leave it to Cudachick to point out a flow issue.

like others i have the same issue if i dont pump slow with the nozzle part way in. i always listen to the gas coming out and when it starts to change sound i slow down more to prevent it from backsplashing.

Do we dare say anything about the Mistress of Metal helping unclog your pipes?

Might be part of an old locking cap that was
broken and fell into the neck.
