A body Rat rod

Yeah it was missing parts but I was going for the rat rod look and though it was cooler that way also added a keg and a half for a gas tank I'll look for more pics
 
In my humble opinion, I always remebered that TRUE rat rods were cars that were not yet finished and not "pretty" enough for shows. The new term or trend in the rat rods I think is poor thinking. Why spend money just to ugly something up? The real rat rods of the 50's-60's were showing bodywork and primer spots and the main focus was either body custimization or just going fast and not worrying about the appearance. Our culture now calls a grungy or flat black car with red wheels and pinstripes a rat rod. I think this is so much easier achieved when we go back to the original type of rat rod and jsut drive while we restore.

my understanding of a rat rod is that you took whatever old car you had, enhanced the performance on the cheap, steel wheels with cheap dog dish or trim rings and chrome nuts, unify the look with primer while waiting for paint, "rigged" any thing needed like junk parts to use for mirrors, bumpers, or grills, that started to build up to an " I did it with what I could find" look.
This became a way to fix up a beater that grew into a stylized look that is driven by now overdoing and stereotyping.
Each type of resto has diverged with its look such as lead sleds, t-buckets, street rods, etc.

That's what i always figured it was. mostly about little to no money function over cosmetic. my rear floor boards were actually boards lol. i think the only real cost on that car was the licensing. most people lump it into a look now like only certain cars or trucks done a certain way. and ya i flat blacked my car because it only cost me 20 bucks and flames and pin stripes cost nothing done with left over paint i got from my father inlaw. heck my shifter knob was made from the bottom of a chair leg rofl.
 
I don't know guys but "Rat Rodding" a Dodge Demon just doesn't seem right to me for some reason. It's hard enough finding good A-Bodies these days let alone purposely finding one and making look as shabby as possible is beyond me.

I've been out of the paint sceen for awhile so someone can give better detailed answers but a actaul satin paint would hold up better.Just black primer will fade and "chalk up" and evantaully ware off.The "flatter" the finish the less protection it has.Think of it this way interior house paint:Flat-you cant wash.Semi gloss-you can wash but be carefull.Gloss-is the toughest of them all and more durable.

SPI makes the epoxy primer you see on my Duster. It's the only one I know of that has uv inhibitor. They added it for those who chose it as a top coat. It's not as durable as a clear coat but they say it will hold up for quite a few years. Non-epoxy primer will not last long. It will not resist rust.

There's also a top coat called Hot Rod Flatz.

Or you can add flatting agent to a clear coat.

If you are really on a budget check out what guys are doing with Rustoleum and a roller. People will scoff at this but there's a method that produces impressive results.
