Which transmission was used with the slant 6 to V8 transmission adapter in the early a100 vans? Was it the 904 or 727? I have the adapter and would like to use it with the appropriate OD transmission in my 87 slant-equipped D100. I'm assuming since the A500 or 518 are based on the 904 & 727, either ought to work since there is plenty of room in the trans tunnel. Comments?

They. Make adapters ?????

Yea - they were cast iron to adapt the V8 904/727 (don't know which or both) to the slant in the van in the mid to late 60s. Someone made a small run of aluminum adapters - maybe 5 to 10 and then quit doing them.

on my 1966 a100 /6 the trans was a 727 short tailshaft trans that had the trans mount on the top. so I would assume that a normal 727 trans would also bolt up to the adapter.

pm coming your way!

The small block transmissions have the same bolt pattern 727 or 904.
I think either would work.
My spider senses are tingling telling me that it was meant for a 727 though.......

I haven't seen one so I'm just guessing when I say this, even though they have the same engine bolt pattern the 904 bellhousing is a little smaller and uses a smaller converter so they might not interchange. My other guess would be that you are correct in that it was meant for a 727 as Ma Mopar generally never installed 904's in trucks, even behind a 6.

I got home early enough tonight to take a few pictures of the adapter. First one would be as if looking from the transmission side. 2nd looking from the engine side; 3rd with a tape measure across the face; 4th with a tape measure across the crank spacer; 5th with a tape measure showing how thick the adapter is and the last one is of the part number

I have a adapter like this. Mine came out of a 68 d100 slant 6 727

I have always heard they used the 727 behind /6's but in my 32 yrs. of dealing with Mopars I have never saw an actual 727 with a /6 bolt pattern. By you having a regular D100 truck with a /6 and 727 that used the adapter it makes me wonder if there was never really a 727 that directly bolted to the /6... Just a thought

they had 727's for taxi and police service for slant sixes...i have never seen one of those adaptors before..neet piece

I want one! just so I can get the complete mockup of the slant with a low mount starter and an OD automatic trans along with the turbo setup I want to add to the dart. I have a front clip of a 66 dart that has a power steering gearbox on it already and I'm going to mock up Turbo "Pishta style", duals exhaust "Waggin style" going to the turbo and if I can get it to fit A/C . so I can have all the goodies for the dart later.

If it is indeed intended for a 727, a 904 won't fit. The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same, but the starter location is slightly different.

I know this because the adaptors that mate the early hemi's (think 1950's) to later transmissions are for 727's, and its because the starter interferes with the engine with a 904. Much to my chagrin, because I have a couple 904's that will soon be extra and a few early hemi's which can't be made to play together.

Great info Don! I have never seen it or heard of of it. Interesting. Was there a adapter between the 318BB and the 727 as well?

A friend of mine has a 727 for a slant and was trying to find out if it was worth anything. I did some checking for him and apparently not worth a lot.

Good Morning Ulf! The 65 Coronet I had with the old style 318 had a 727 with no adapter. When the originbal 727 went I, I swapped in an early 70s with no issues (other than fabricating the shift linkage).

if your wantin an automatic and gonna run a strong slanty that 727 would be worth keepin
