I am thinking of getting antique plates this year when my registration expires. What problems am I going to run in to trying to get antique plates for my Valiant being that it is so far from stock?
Will I have to Take my traction bars of for the pics and change my wheels or put hubcaps on? I was thinking of just putting black socks over my traction bars before I take the pics along with maybe pulling my beauty rings off and putting on a set of hubcaps.
What do you think?
I would think it is the same from state to state for antique plates but I was wondering what I am going to run in to with this.
Thanks,
Paul

I put vintage 1966 plates on my far from stock 66 Valiant here in MN, all they needed was the plate I was gonna use so they could enter it in the system as a "Collector" plate.....no pics of the car needed. But in MN, its probably different, street rods can have them too, I think we even have a "street rod" plate too.

i have the original plate for my duster but it is oregon so wa wont let me use it dang it lol

what does putting antique plates have to do with the appearence of the car? In Connecticut you can put antique plates on anything if it's 25 years or older modified or not. Connecticut does not care what it looks like.

Here in Pa. I know they need pics of front, rear and both sides of the car. But just not sure of the stipulations.

In ma you can get them on anything over 25 yrs old. No inspection, BUT you are only "supposed" to drive it to and from shows or meets if I'm not mistaken. If you are insured under your regular insurance company the rates are cheaper but if you were to get into an accident driving around you might have a hard time getting them to pay.. I'd never do it here but may go with a vanity plate.

In Indiana you can use model year plates. They give you an antique plate to carry in your trunk with some paper work for the model year plate

in colorado , they couldnt care less about anything other than the year of the car on the registration.

well here there is a difference in collectors plates and antique plates. collectors is anything older than 25years antique is plate matching the year of the car. i will be getting collectors plates because my cars original plate wont work. so ill just keep it for car shows.

In Pa. they want the pictures to show a stock looking car, no mag wheels, no hood scoops, no alterations to the suspension (ride height), you may also have problems with the window tint and the stripes. Also, digital pictures are not accepted. I have heard of some people sending in pictures of a different car the same color but stock. They dont come out to check your car. You can always say you did the modifacations after the pictures were taken while you were waiting for you new tags.

man I'm glad I live in connecticut, with those goofy DMV laws, Penn. has, except for the high taxes we pay...LOL!

When I got Historic plates for the Fairlane in AZ it was just a form to fill out, no pictures necessary. Here in WA. state, at least this is what I have been told, you can use year of manufacture plates. Guy on Craigslist sells them. From what I have been told it is just like your standard plate, so no pictures necessary. From what I remember you pay a one time fee for registration. I also have been told that I might get hassled if I drive the car alot. Never looked into Historic plates......moral of my rambling, contact YOUR dmv...

you are correct and last year they got rid of the mileage thing so you can drive however much you want now i have been looking into it my self. you still tell them its only driven for pleasure though lol lady at the dmv gave me all the info and its the same if you go collectors plates one time fee never have to buy tags again !

I think you'll probably need to check with your DMV since every state is different. Up until the past year Kansas has been super relaxed on antique plates. Anything 35 years or older and they have also allowed vintage plates to be reinstated so you can have a year correct plate on your vehicle. Now they are becoming more strict on what can run them. They don't mind modifications if they are period correct is how the local Highway Patrol officer described it to me. Big wheels, modern suspension, and electronic fuel injection are all grounds to get your registration pulled. I don't know that they will ever really enforce it but that's technically how they want them.

They changed the requirements in PA for antique plates in 2012. You no longer need pics for stock cars. They basically take your word for it. You do need pics for the street rod plates and if a cop was sharp enough they could give you a hard time for having antique plates on an obviously modified car. They also now allow you to have vintage original plates providing they are period correct for the car. You have to take a pic of the original plate & give them an extra $75. I just went through this (successfully) a couple of months ago for 3 old cars.

In Idaho, "year of manufacture" plates can be paid as a full registration and used just like any other plate

But some of the collector/ old timer plates have a mileage restriction, and language in the law about "driving to organized events and parades," AND it has language intended to define the car as "substantially original." This would leave out heavily modified "rods" with cages, non stock scoops, turbos, etc.

I scored a pair of '67 plates for mine, but you only have to run the rear. So I have an "M" logo on the front. Unfortunately, 67 Idaho plates were not all that attractive, LOL

Here in WV there is no checking of vehicle.
There is a restriction on when you can drive them.
They actually releaxed the regulations and now you can drive them from 4:00 pm on Fridays to Sunday at midnight just like regular tags, also on holidays and parade days.
I have an original 1948 plate on my Willys, and a state issued antique tag on my duster.

Can you drive it during the week to "get repairs done" LOL:yawinkle:

i have antique tags on my dart(the one in my pic) all i did was take stock hubcaps from a 70 dart. put duct tape around the rim of the hubcap so i wouldnt scratch anything.. then made a big ball of duct tape for the center.. and put 2 on.. snapped a pic.. took a pic of the rear of the car then went to the other side.. did the same thing..and photoshopped the electric fuel pump out.. printed my pics and off to the notary I went. i had no issues..one time i did use a pic of another car.. and it worked

I got my tag just the way you see my car in the pictures. I was told they wouldn't accept it because of the wheels but they did. Depends on who is working in the DMV that day. I know a guy that has a 69 Stingray all stock, redline tires and all but was rejected for having Torq Thrust wheels.

I florida we have antique tags for anything over 25 years or custom vehicle, horseless carrage, streetrod tags. No photo needed or restrictions.
