What was the ultimate "normal production" factory A Body?

LET me think...lol

It drove like a 'truck, did not stop, and handled poorly.

But, in a straight line with room to stop, my 69 440 Cuda' was the
'wildest street ride ever'.

The 'pretzel logic' exhaust system (driver side) was 'the funniest joke'
Mopar ever played on the buying public.

like ABodyJoe says...I'd like a 68 cuda fastback 340 4 speed. or a 68 dart hard top 340 4 speed. im sure of which a few people are very lucky enough to own one are on this very site.

you bastards.

IMO...my old '69 Dart 340 Swinger was a wonderfully balanced package for street use. Not nose-heavy like a big block car so handled well on the street and SoCal freeways. Got reasonable mileage for the day and still ran 14.28 sec. e.t. @ 98+ mph in Pure Stock at OCIR back in early 1970 - that was with a 727 and non-SureGrip 3.23 rear.
Loved picking on big-block cars on the street. The quick-revving 340 in a light A-body would walk away from a big-block car at the start and quick street races never went a full quartermile so the big-block couldn't get into it's top-end power advantage.

^^^^^This is well stated. Although I know I'll get an argument!

But seriously for all around performer it would be a 340 car my pick would be 68 cuda 4speed or 71Demon/Duster 340 the thermo carb and 10.5 compression was a very hot package.

340 car 68-71. I had one of every year except a convertable. My funnest 70 340 4 speed swinger. Should never let that one go.

Absolutely Pure Stock?
I'm torn between a 71 340 because of the big TQ, hi-compression, 2.02 heads, etc. 340's love big carbs.
Or my favorite, a 68 Barracuda strippo notchback, big cam 340, 4 speed w/ 3.91 factory gears. I'll bet with the right driver (Hello Ronnie) it may have been good for 14.0's.
The 69 M codes have the potential to be in there too but running all these cars on the stock E70 X14's it may lose.
How 'bout a "D" dart though that has to be considered a drag package.

There was a F.A.S.T. car at the nats this year, a 383 cuda that was in the 12's. But how "stock" was it? Nobody says what they have in those things.

Yeh, LOL, Factory 'appearing', 'stock" tires. Nothing stock about any of em. I have to give a lot of credit for how fast some of those are, though, without headers.

I must be a lot older than you guys, but I remember a 62 dodge dart 383 with factory dual quads, solid lifter cam , 11 to 1 that ran really well, I have driven these cars and they handle reasonably well and were quite quick....

That wasn't an A-body.

My vote is for the 71 Demon 340 -4 speed with bucket seats and 3:91 suregrip. Next would be the 71 Duster with same configuration followed by a 70 Dart 340 Swinger.

Hard to argue against the 440 and 383 Darts and Baracuda's and think it just boils down to personal preference.

Seems like the 1971 340 4-Speed (340 Duster or Demon 340) is getting the most
hits.

Many love the Thermo-Quad Carburetor on the 71' 340, with the 4-Speed.

Add the 3.91 Sure-Grip Rear, Bucket-Seats, Disc-Brakes, Power Steering and Rally-Wheel Package.

Though, I personally like the Special Perfomance Axle (4.10 Gears) Option.
