Ok, so I took the dart out today with my son who is home for Christmas...we did a few burnouts and a couple passes...that being said.. now I have no second gear...automatic 3 speed 904.... if you put it in drive and let it shift itself it hangs up in 1st gear and then goes to drive...if you manually shift, 1st is fine, put in 2nd is just like neutral...drive is fine.. reverse is fine... I am correct in presuming the issue is not linkage and more likely internal tranny???? thanks in advance for your advice & Merry Christmas!!!

Ohhhh,....sounds like ya outa drop the pan and see if somethin is layin in there,...prolly not, cause you prolly woulda heard it,...

If your band adjustment was too loose, the band strut can actually fall out and cause a loss of 2nd gear. Not a big deal, but you will need to drop the pan and valve body and check the front band aply linkage. If that looks good you can test the operation of the band with about 40lbs of air pressure to the port that activates it from the valve body. If that all works ok something may be up in the valve body.

X2 also check the kick down lever.
I had a 5.0 lever break causing no 2nd gear. If this is the case the trans must be removed as the lever is held in with a pin thats behind the tq conv.

I saw this exact same problem summer before last with a buddy's truck. Band was so loose the strut fell out and it lost 2nd gear. Dropped the pan and VB and put the strut back in and tightened the band and assembled it and it's still working fine.

As Pete mentioned, if the front band linkage is intact you need to pressure test at the front servo apply port with about 35 lbs of air to see if the servo is working and applying the band. If your not sure what port that is I can scan and post a page from the factory service manual that shows it.

Can't say for certain on 904's but I've changed the band lever on 727's while the trans. was still installed. All ya gotta do is take off the inspection cover and the kickdown lever retaining pin cover plug is down in the lower outside corner. Use a long 1/4" drive wobble extension and you can get it out and back in.

Thanks for everyone's input...Fishy, if you could post that service manual page, that would be great!!! Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

Sounds like either a front band problem or the servo went. Sometimes the bands are known to break loose at the spot welds on the anchor point. Drop the pan & check your adjustment, but since it happened doing burnouts you may find bad news.

They act exactly like that if the adjuster just backed off also.
Neutrals out in manual second (also known as "no engine braking"), and auto shifts 1-3
It definately is a front band issue though, whichever reason.

Ok. I thought I had transfered it over from my old puter but can't seem to find it so I re-scanned it and hopefully it'll turn out right. Click on the attachment link and I believe it should come up. If you have trouble with it PM me your e-mail address and I'll e-mail it to you. Right at the top you'll see one labeled front servo apply. That's the one you apply 30-40 psi of air pressure to to activate the front band servo.

Your welcome John. If you can drop the pan and valve body you can diagnose it as it's real easy. You might want to check into a ATSG serv. manual. Their basically a copy of the factory serv. manual and easy to read and understand even for a novice. Their available on Amazon real cheap.
