Change your auto console to 4 spd with pics

The shifters are different for non console and console cars. With a console the shifter comes up through the console in a location more to the right, then bends towards the driver. The console bases are different auto to 4 speed, but only in that the 4 speed consoles have a large cut out on the driver side of the console base presumably to clear the shifter. The console top plates are obviously different auto to 4 speed, but as in my post above an auto top plate can be modified to work with a 4 speed. The shifters used up to mid 68 were made by the Inland tool company, and honestly are crappy and very sloppy. Mid 68 up to sometime in the early to mid 70's the shifters were made by Hurst. This is true for both console and non console cars (both inland and hurst made a console and a non console shifter). I believe the cut out on the side of the base is a leftover from the inland shifter, as I personally have used an un-modified auto console base with a hurst console shifter. Despite its looks the hurst console shifter works, and if everything else is in good shape can work very well. Hurst used to say "shift as hard as you want, just dont break your arm".
Here is a link showing a reproduction shifter handle for a console, if you look around brewers site you will see other shifter handles as well. The old inand shifter can be identified by a "T" reverse lockout below the shift ball which must be lifted to engage reverse. http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38329
