Ok FABO, I am trying to decide, what is the better way to Refinish a set of Rallye wheels. Paint or Powder Coat???? I have 2 Brand New Wheel Vintiques 14x7 for the back & 2 Good Used 14x5.5 for the front of my 69' Dart. Now the 2 New have that ugly flat grey powder coat wheel vintiques uses & the 2 fronts are 2 used I just bought (Thanks John) from a FABO member. Now what in your opinion...
1 - Looks Better
2 - Holds up Better

P.S. - Leanna, would Love to get You to do these for me, but you might as well be 10000 miles away for shipping costs. Have a local guy (friend of mine) I know it Won't be as good as Your's but it's an option..

I would powder coat them just for the fact that you can hose them off as they are a very smooth surface. Paint can still rust through over time.I think powder coating leaves them a little shiny though, maybe there have a flattening agent they can tone it down with? You may lose the year markings too.

The powder coating looks better to me, IMO .... Plus is more durable

I too bought a set of their 5x4x15" Rallye's.I left the powdercoating on them, and just had the front scuffed and painted the Highest Metallic Silver I could find to have the protection and the look I wanted !! :blob:

Well the set that is on my Dart now, have a lot of spray putty to fill in imperfections, & they have been painted in a (non-exact) Mopar silver. More like a (Forgive Me) Chevy rallye wheel silver because it was brighter than the original Mopar laquer finish.

I would just clean them up the best you can and paint them with the mopar rattle can ralley wheel silver, it's by far the easiest and cheapest way of making them look good. I have almost 400 hundred into these cop wheels including the used wheels and caps. They were a little crusty when I first got them but after sandblasting, a coat of black epoxy primer and a some PB9 base\clear urethane, there were ready to go. Way to much time, effort and money. I sell liquid and powder coatings for a living and had one of my most talented customers powder coat another set in a gloss black urethane but they didn't turn out nearly as nice as the blue liquid coated set.

Paint them....powder coating just doesn't look right in my opinion.
You can spot the powder coating rims from a mile away.

Ontario Canada.

everytime i have had a powdercoated wheel ....it seems to chip after awhile and looks horrible.....plus its expensive.

i would use paint with a clear coat ......if not just the rattle can with the right color.

at least the paint you can re-finish easy later......for cheap.

Paint was what I had my last set done in & what I was thinking about getting this set done in as well. But wanted some other opinions.

the ones on my Scamp were about $98 total lol- $75 for the rims (with about 6 center caps to mix and match), $15 for the trim rings (not correct, I know, but I like 'em) and about $8 for the paint:D

Whewwwwwwwww, tough crowd! :-D

I totally understand, and it's the main reason I don't do a lot of rims at my place. Four steelies, two 8x10s and two 8x16s Wheel Vintiques Gennys, cost almost $100 heavily insured one way just to Mississippi (not very far). See below for the rest, since that applies to the guy you're going to hire too.

I don't know if you saw my previous comment in another thread about Wheel Vintiques' steel wheels, but the powder primer they use at the factory isn't compatible with most other powders and is several mils too thick to obtain a good ground. Ten bucks says these are probably the same reasons yours didn't turn out too well efriedrich ... ask your customer how the job really went while he was working them up for you. ;-)
