It all depends how much power you want to run, 318 with a cam and intake backed by an auto, run a 741 all day long. Run a 408 stroker and a four speed step up to the 742 or 489. People like the 742 over the 489 because of the larger pinion bearing, however a 489 case with the crush sleeve eliminator installed is pretty stout and the difference between the two strength wise is just a big argument lol. Not to hijack but i have a complete (minus drums and brake pads) e-body 8 3/4 with a 489 case and a cone style sure grip in it for $350 plus the ride. Needs rebuilt with new bearings, seals and a gear set though.
