I'm a new owner of a 68' 440 Barracuda. I'm looking forward to putting fresh oil in the beast this weekend and was hoping that I could get a recommendation on the best oil. Should I go Synthetic? What weight?

The engine has about 10k miles on it.
Specs:
440ci balanced engine
Keith Black 10.1:1 pistons
Ported heads
SS Valves
1.7:1 Gold Crane roller rockers
Mopar Purple Shaft cam 284 degree, .484" lift
Mopar Performance Intake
750 Holley (3,000 miles since new)
Schumacher headers

Thanks!

Mobil1 full syn is what all my car run/use. Don't forget to add the zinc if you are not using a full roller setup.

I use Rotella-T 15/40. good oil, has all the good aditive to include zinc which you need to make the camshaft live. I also add an additive (ZDDP) at each oil change.

Nice notch fish! Welcome to FABO. With the flat tappet cam you will need zinc added to the oil you choose.

wow you must be proud that car is one sweeeeeet ride love the color and love the notches. i use shell rotella 15w-40 in my car with a shot of lucas break in oil.

I use Comp.Cams hotrod/muscle car 10W30 oil because of the zinc and phosphorous additives needed to make the flat tappet cam live longer. Also, you can use Bob Gibbs Racing oil.

Adjust your W value to the lowest number possible (0W, 5W, 10W) and your normal operating temp viscosity (30, 40) to provide correct oil pressure at your operating rpm range.

Rule of thumb is 10+ psi / 1000 rpm, so if you run up to 6000 rpm, then be sure your oil viscosity (and oil system) provides 66 psi at 6000 rpm.

Running extra thick oil like 15w40 or 20w50 and subsequently very high oil pressures at 2500 + rpm has several negative impacts on the engine and if your engine temps are consistently normal (180 - 220) there is no reason to run overly thick oil.

There are alot of 5w and 0w oils nowadays which offer superior start-up viscosity (quick to circulate which lowers startup wear considerably) and still maintain good viscosity at operating temp (100C). There are a number of reasons to run synthetic. A couple are they have the wide temperature operating ranges and they dont degrade to a different viscosity as badly.

So if you run 10w30 typically, you can also run 5w30 or 0w30 synthetic but will have better startup lubrication and the same operating viscosity.

I vote 0w30 or 5w40 full synthetic with 4 oz of lucas zddp additive and a mobile 1 synthetic oil filter.

Or

If you can find 0w30 or 5w40 with built in zinc / phosphorous I would run that rather than dosing a batch of oil with zddp.

I would stay away from racing oils if you plan to have typical OCIs because they are not made to daily drive or have 3000 + mile change intervals.

Mobile1, joe gibbs, castoroil Edge 0w30 (the german one).

royal purple dont need to add anything and proven for few ponies on the dyno

My 360 idles @ 20 and drives at 50 with 10w40

BUT idles at 40 and drives at 50-55 with 20w40
and idles at 50 and drives at 50-55 with VR1 50w

Ive been told the lo pressure @ idle is no big deal but like seeing the better pressure.
Any feedback appreciated...

It seems like if clearances were your max pressure issue, it would get better with thicker oil. I think possibly your pressure relief valve in your oil pump is weak.

My 4.7 dakota when fully warmed up, runs at the min "mark" when idling and the max "mark" when running at 3000 + rpms. I run 5w30 napa full syn and napa platinum syn filter. It behaves like the oil press relief valve kicks in at the max mark. What ever those marks indicate, who knows.
