I have been cleaning out the old sealant in the drip rails and have lots of surface rust. Im cleaning as best as I can, but I dont think I can get it all shiny. What do you guys think about this plan... Im wanting the paint the recess of the drip rail with POR15 and then you sealer over that. Is this a solid plan or just waste of time?

BTW, what did Mopar use in the drip rail. Near the outer edge is like bondo and everything else is like silicone. The silicone is easy to remove, but that hard stuff is a fight.

I wouldn't put POR15 on anything that was going to have finished paint over (outer body panels).

X2....... I would see if the rust would clean off with a few narrow (thin) wire wheel's, that you can purchase at Harbor Freight Tools, or a good hardware store. Just make sure you get the metal shiny clean, and without alot of pitting, or rust stain's, as it may try to eventually lift the new caulk, paint etc. You may have to get the seam area's in the drip rail channel's blasted before you proceed. On something nice, we would use either SEM or 3M 2 part seam sealer (get the self leveling kind) as It will last forever if done right. The only hold back to using this stuff, is you have to purchase their respective brand application gun's. Some Paint & Body store's, will let you either borrow one, or rent one for you to use. Good luck.

Clen it as best you can, then soak with Ospho, from the hardware store. Then use whatever you want. Paintible seam sealer, etc.

Any reason not to spray epoxy primer in there? If I did would I also need the seam sealer? I have not gotten to the roof line yet and was thinking why not.

Get it as clean as you can possibly get it, shoot epoxy primer and then paintable seam sealer. Once the sealer cures, it can be primed and painted along with the rest of the car. 3M makes a good paintable sealer. I think 08505 is beige. You can get white and other colors also. It won't matter if you're painting it. This stuff will work with your standard caulk gun. Apply and level with your finger. It does not have to be thick, it just needs to seal.

Self leveling seam sealer is a poor option of this kind of driprail. It will all flow into the cowl according to some friends that run a paint and body shop. The idea on the POR is it does not need to be painted. The paintable seam sealer would cover the POR and then you paint that. The seam sealer on my floor boards sticks very well to POR.

POR15 should work as long as it won't have uV rays hitting it. I have been using Rust Destroyer in quarts or spray can. It claims to be the only paint that both etches bare metal and converts rust.
