what do cops look for?

-
Could be a number of different reasons for the stop..........training a new officer, profiling time/place as a reason for the stop, checking for stolens, dope runners, just fishing etc...

If you dont like the justification for the "stop" (if any) call the precinct, talk to their Sergeant and go from there.

The way it sounds to me.Most likely a car was reported stolen that fit your aunts description. So they were on gaurd as they checked everything out.My theory anyways.

the more i think about it, that was prolly it ....its a 2007 ford Taurus in sandpebble beige....there are only a gazillion of the same car in the county....everytime i turn a corner i see another one .....mega common car. so if they were having trouble with or one was stolen then good luck finding it LOL ......even our neigbor up the road has one that looks like the exact same car LOL

If you were driving under the speed limit they probably thought you were either lost or were looking around for things to steal.....

i was going 60 in a 65 zone .....it was a highway type road

When I lived in NJ I got stopped a few times for driving under the limit. The cops told me that there had been several thefts in the area so any time they noticed some one driving slowly it they would pull them over, saying that you were a "suspicious person"....

I'm thinkin they were just a..holes like most all of em,...I can say that because I've dated a couple, and now I work with one,...Walk around dressed like jack booted Nazi's who got the "Do as I say, not as I do" attitude,...They have the ability to ruin yer day if you look at em wrong, without reason or probable cause....I figure they are insecure/power trippin/got beat up in school or all of the above...

I have to deal with them on a professional level when I do my fire dept stuff,...But I gotta tell ya, things generally go a lot smoother when we can finish up and get the hell outa dodge before they show up, ...I've learned that after 35 years of fire and EMS work...

I bet ya'll can count on one hand the number of times you've had a cop give you good news...

No, I'm not a felon or a dealer, I'm a vet, a registered voter and gun owner,...Sorry if your offended, but there is a reason I live in a cop free town, and like it...Not a fan,...At All...

If you get pulled over, always be polite (even if they're not),...turn on your inside light,...put your hands on the wheel,...and don't argue, you'll almost never win,...

I'm starting to share your feelings on most of these small town wanna be's. I live in a small farming town of 10,000. Seems like every time I stop at 7-11 for a cup of coffee before work I have a different shaved head local yokal sizing me up standing next to the coffee and donut display. Most times I feel like asking "what the f^&k are you looking at?" These cops are a dime a dozen and most have some kind of inferiority complex who get a stiffy if you have a tail light out. My attitude is that if all else fails in life, I could always become a cop.

They were looking for "Probable Cause", which would mean that if you had been drinking it would have been that line cross they'll say you did, or fumbling with the radio may actually be you fumbling with your gun, or any other number of instant excuses they can come up with!!

I used to have an old 1970 Dodge pickup, and can't tell you how many times I got pulled over for the "license plate light" being out, or in this case non-existant. I finally couldn't take it anymore and told one cop that the old steel bumper didn't have one, wasn't going to be getting one, and to write me for the ticket so I could finally fight this in court. I think word got out because I was never pulled over for it again!!

"Probable Cause"...thats my theory!! Geof

i live in a farm area too and at night they have a shift of nice guys.....i deliver newspapers in the wee hours of the morning and at that time there are a few officers who know me and know what im doing out, so they have actually seen me stopped before and come to ask me if i need help with anything....actually makes me feel safer bcoz i know they will help me and one time i had a strange guy chasing me and i was able to pass by where they hang out with the guy on my tail and they jumped in to see what was going on ........the guy chasing me was drunk and thought i was mailbox bashing. kinda scary.

but these two gents today were on the afternoon shift and i have never seen them before and they obviously didnt know me. makes me wonder if they are hiring and training new guys

The devils advocate side is this,...I've got a few good friends who are troopers, and locals...Cool as hell,...Have a beer or two off duty, Work great with them when its game time,...One of em drives a replica A/C Cobra that he built himself,...I call em the 1 percenters,...To bad their attitude doesn't rub off on the majority...

I pulled up beside a city cop here recently and made the motion to roll down his window.
When he did I told him to take the car back to the yard and get one with turn signals. :)

I grew up with one for a Father, so I'm not the least bit intimidated by them.

Yours were probably doing a training/stolen chk as said.
Plus they might have hoped you would get nervous and take off, and that's why they left you in the car and took so long.
Usually on a stolen chk they get you out of the car ASAP.

That's probably it, I know the El Paso County Sheriff got some tax money with the election.

My baby sis did the same for years, she delivered to one of the cool cops that I know in the next town over,...I never had to worry about her...

The car probably fit the description of a vehicle involved in something else & they had to verify it wasn't the same car or not.

Years ago I got pulled over 1 time in my '68 Chevy II SS on the way home from work in traffic & the cop had passed me, made a U-turn & then pulled me over. He proceeds to get out of the car PISTOL DRAWN & orders me to keep my hands where he can see them! Gets me out of the car & puts me against the car(spread 'em!) & pats me down. He insists I open the trunk & let him look inside, after all I've got nothing to hide. All the while I'm asking him what this was about? He keeps telling me I'll find out soon enough! He looks in the trunk & then rather dissatasfied pokes around in it Looks again in the back seat & then asks for license & registration etc. Again I ask & I'm told "you'll find out soon enough!" Another car pulls up & then another. His supervisor gets out of 1 of the cars & calls him over, A minute later he comes over & hands me my stuff back & tells me "OK your free to go." "OH NO NO NO!!" I said you aint doing all that to me & not telling me WTF is going on!! He reluctantly explains that as he passed me a call came over that the fish market was robbed(yes, they stole fish- not cash!) in the next town over & the vehicle was described as an "early model Green Chevrolet". I asked how the hell did he think I made it across town in rush hour traffic 3+ miles away that fast? He just looked at me rather blank & said "you never know." I said "Good luck making Detective!"

Don't get me wrong and I would feel different if I lived in a crime ridden area, but nothing happens here and I mean nothing. Some of them are cool and actually helpful. I am actually good friends with the chief of police and he lives two houses down from me. Our kids play together all of the time, we go to the same church and have had dinner on a couple of occasions with his family.
I don't have an issue with a cop who is very professional, heck I know they have a job to do, but I can't stand one who has an attitude from the get go and plays twenty questions, because I have a light out.

Yes sir they did and I made the hiring list!!! Just waiting on a phone call for a background check.

I learned that sometimes having a since of humor with a cop is a good thing. To back this up my record is 23 pull overs and zero tickets. I am only 22 by the way. I got stopped once for rolling through a stop sign at about 4 a.m. The cop asked me what I was doing out that late. I was with 2 friends. I had been up all night and said what came to my mind...."what are YOU doing out this late". I could tell she got a kick out of that and we started talking for a while and she sent me on my way. The last time I got pulled over was becuase I had a tail light out and the other was busted. I told the cop that I was parked and a deer ran into the back of my truck, he laughed and I left. There are other times where being respectful is very important though. I just like to push my luck...hopefully I get hired on at a department before my luck runs out though.

it's like Kurt Russell's character says in Dark Blue (paraphrasing): No one ever wants to see a cop until some a$$hole sticks a gun in their face, then you can't get there soon enough"

I think they have to pull you over if your car is close to the description of one in a recent crime or something like that.

One time my dad got pulled over in this big white dodge van we had sat like a zillion people. the cop said sorry we pulled you over but we have to because your car fits the description. He said you don't fit the description at all but he had to run the plates real quick and stuff. Turns out some perv was flashing his junk at kids at the bus stop and had a white van.

Also one thing I've learned from being pulled over is don't reach for anything until they ask for you to. wait till they ask for your license and registration before going for it. for all they know you've got a pistol in your glove box.

Sold a lowered mini truck,to a business partner. Phone rings at 7:00 am ,on a Sunday .I answer it,local P.D..... The officer stated" Do you own this truck still?" .Stated "No, I have paper work ,to prove it." .Then the officer informs me,that the vehicle was seen leaving a homicide scene. I stated" I have the paperwork to back it". End of problem. As for Rani, " probable cause",some looking to meet quota .End of month near.

They probably though it suspicious that you were going 5 under the speed limit. They do that a lot here. I can go 12 over all day long. 5 under... no
