I am sure a lot of you have been in this spot! I have a trash talking Ford friend with a crappy '68 Cougar. It is running a lame 302 roller motor with some head work. Car is not set up at all suspension wise. In fact the rear spring bushings are worn out and the rear hops violently on launch. Anyways, to the point. He ran a low 14. He is claiming it will smoke my 'Cuda's ***. My car is running a 340 with X-heads. Engine is bored .040 over. I have a Crane 509" cam and Hooker Performance headers. Edelbrock intake and Holley 600 carb.Flowmasters on 2 1/2" exhaust dumped at rear. Trans is an A833 4-speed a-body 18 spline. Rear is 8 3/4 741 case with 3:91 gears. Have Suregrip but it is not installed. Fiberglass hood with Hemi scoop. Fiberglass bumpers. Gutted doors with lexan. I saved the original doors to this factory 'Cuda. So purist don't worry! I also failed to mention that I have a brand new pair of Super Stock springs waiting in my garage along with an adjustable pinion snubber.
I have to beat this trash talking Ford head! he hates Mopars. Can I do it with what I got? Oh yea... he has slicks and I have old school Firestone bias plies on 7" Torque Thrust.

Your combo looks good but you might need more carb and better tires. If you do the it should not be a problem to smoke your ford buddy.

What carb have y'all found that seems to go good with my combo? Something in the 650 cfm range?

My engine is not that much different from yours and I am running an eddy 750 on it and it works well. I am running a performer RPM intake on mine.

what intake?

I'd run a 750dp on it.
yes,..thats what i ran on my 340,x headed motor,a-833 4 speed.similar to op's set up,..was a bit ornery tryin to ease round town but man that thing would come alive when ya nailed it!!! you'll need the sure grip an some sticky tires,..my duster ran 7.20's in the 8th ,was a 8.90 with thermoqaud

Yea too much cam for that carb. Problem I see is getting off the line without blowing the tires off. If you run slicks you need a driveshaft loop. If you are running small ujoints expect something to give if you get carried away with slicks. You should not have any problem covering this guy.

You'll need a little more carb. Install that Suregrip. (The one wheeler won't get it done.) Also, get a set of drag radials or something similar. Your combination with these changes should lower your quarter mile times. At least enough to beat the Ford.

Hi, don't think you will have any problems taking the cougar, My first duster was 1970 340 stock block/balanced/3-angle valve job/750 holley/410 posi-8-3/4/904 with cheetah valve body with mickey thompson ss street/ ran in 13:50's 1/4 mile, had a guy(my rival) with a 351c in a 1969 mustang that his best time was 14:02

Glad to hear you beat him! Thanks!

Assuming you can row the gears with that 4 speed, put a 750dp on there and you should be good...but it will be close....the difference will probably come down to launch (get some good tires).

I'm with flyfish. If your good at grabbin gears(and the suregrip with drag radials) You should smoke his a$$ You got a good combo even with the 600 carb that should run mid to low 13's. Don't know where LC is or if you are doing this on a track or not. Don't know what the density altitude is where you are but with good air that Cuda should be in the lower 13's no problem.

ditto...

that car should be in the 12's if you ask me..

x2 My Duster would run 13.0 with the 3.91 and I was running the .484 cam. The only "lightening" I did was remove the rear seat for the roll bar and that added more than removed. I ran a 750dp and a 904 rmvb. It was also a 72 with the lower compression 340 that had never been out of the car or had the heads taken off of it since new. So get that SG in there and you should have no problem smokin that guy.

If I can get my 318 into the 12's with about the same stuff you have done (or are going to do), than you should have no problem beating the FoMoCo.

But I would also go with more carb, slicks, and SG.

Install the SS springs, bolt on a 750 Carb that is set up well, don't miss a shift and you will spank his A$$! Then run side by side at 30 mph, punch it and see his jaw drop when you pull away with ease!:burnout:

a stock 340 in A-body should run high 13's easily with proper tune and headers.
traction (tires) and shifting is another thing, shifting is on you. practice.
good luck, but my money is on you.

Aside from good tires (slicks), and sure grip, I would suggest subframe connectors. The stiffer your car is, the better it will react.
