Anyone ever seen a car with no "Fore Sale" sign on it and asked if it could be for sale??
The reason im asking is because there is a 64 or 65 Dart convertable I see every day on the way to work just sitting under a tree, it has beed there (has not moved) for three years or longer. Looks to be in really good shape.

Do it! I've been told they plan to restore it "someday" so it's not for sale, but I've also got a couple nice cars by asking.

for sure! thats how i landed my 47,732 all original miles 1974 powerwagon. for 900 bones. Worst case scenario they say no.

Thats usually what i look for . If they haven't posted it for sale , they haven't cleaned it up , polished it off , or had mechanical repairs done to it . That all spells , lower price . Got several great deals lke that , including the Daytona .

Doesn't hurt to ask, unless it has a NOT FORSALE SIGN, it very well could be for sale, they might not of thought of it yet.

The ones that gets ask frequently and don't want to sell either move it out of site or put a not for sale sign in it.

Had a 72 challenger and lived a seldom traveled road put it under a lean too behind the garage and people still would stop and ask

Absolutely! I used to cruise neighborhoods on weekends going "car shopping" with a buddy. We found MANY cars that way. You get a lot of "someday I'm gonna" replies but sometimes you can score a heckuva deal. The best thing to do is let them set the price. Do not make an offer, let them tell you how much they want for it. Most important thing is to bring cash, because if they give you a price right off the bat you can always negotiate if you say, I can pay cash right now for it. Also, make sure they have a title available before you hand over the cash.

I get sick of the a--holes that ask me if my 68 Barracuda fastback 340-S is for sale and then try to offer only $500 or $1000... WTF??? Are you kidding me?

Sounds like i need to go ask them what they want for it. If i find the time this weekend to go ask Ill let you buys know how it turns out. Thanks!

I scored a 74 Charger 400-4bbl, auto, console, buckets, a/c and cruise control for $500 that way.

I hate people like you disturbing my family and helping yourself into my car playing with the stero and opening up my hood.
Jerks like you are the sole reason I'd have gun load by the door.

I am so not scared of a home invasion but have had it with morons just waltzing onto my land and just start laying hands on, in and around the car.

Then you have the GOD DANM nerve to askif it is for sale when not only is there is no sign in it.
What fereakin kind of *** wipe are you??? Disturbing my family dinner and helping yourself to paywith my car. What kindocdivine "tip" did you get to even consider such a *** headed move?

I hope you all get shot at.

I don't go on someones property, but if I see them outside I will stop and ask. If they say no I don't push but sometimes they will talk about the car and even show it to you. Don't go there and mess with any ones car unless you want an *** full of buckshot. If they talk to you so a little respect and don't lowball them. Sometimes you can become friends with them and they might decide to sell. RESPECT is what its about.

As one who is usually into obscure cars, YES... Honestly, obscure cars sell more without advertising than with...

After all, when was the last time you heard about a '91 Impulse RS for sale!? ;)

Totally agree - before you even get close to the car, you need to knock on the door. Politely ask if they are looking to sell "the old car in the yard." Always, let the owner decide the price first.

If they say, "No" offer them your name and number in case they change their mind. If they say no, try to get them talking about the car and their plans for it. You'd be surprised how many people start talking about the car and then convince themselves that they'll never really do what they want.

Now there's the worst case scenario!

All the time.

Thats how you make the Best Deals.
Just ask.

But have respect for thier property.

I always like to plant the SEED, that "this is gonna take a lot of money to bring back to Road Worthy"

And use the phrase/question: "Have You THOUGHT about letting go of that Old Car"

If you spout off the exact model/year/trim....they assume you know what your looking at.....sand bag your knowledge and just ask respectfully if "letting go of that old car" has crossed their minds.

Good Luck..... but we all want to see pictures.

:protest:

Just my two cents,
I think pleading ignorance is the wrong direction if you are talking to a person who knows what it is. I would be more willing to sell one of my projects to a person who has a clue and would dismiss a "that old car" statement as a probable scrapper.

only one thing to add to that......and thats a fair statement.

in the game of buying/selling.....buyers have certain "powers"...and sellers have certain "powers".

I give up no buying power either intially, or after the price has been set.
My mindset is to get the product for the lowest price.
If I go straight for : Do you want to sell that 1971 Plymouth Hemi' Cuda Convertible sitting in the yard......I give away that what they have is rare/desireable/and not forgotten, right off the bat......then they come back with: Ohhh you KNOW about that there car, huh?....and ya we've considered selling it for $250,000....since it IS a rare car.

But if I say that "old car".....they think I am interested in fixing up an old car....which is less destructive to their "selling" power,...and "productive" in MY buying power......where they would have to SHOW ME, the value of whatever they are holding.

You can do it how ever you want....I'm telling you what works for the Buyer.

worse than that (well, almost as bad) is the people who say "if you ever want to sell it, let me know" and then when you decide to sell it, they aren't interested.

I always stop and ask about cars I see, and like to strike up a conversation with people about them. I'm always very honest about my intentions and let them know what my plans for the car would be. If it's a rusty parts car, I don't try to feather it up, I just tell them I would like to buy it for parts. If I'm interested in a car that can be saved, I'll tell them that too, that I'll be working on it to put it back on the road, if not for myself than for someone else who can enjoy it!! No harm in asking, and I always tell them that I can take no for an answer...I hear it all the time. I am married after all!!!LOL!! Geof

I bought my Barracuda at a garage sale. It was not for sale, but I asked. We went for a ride, I thought it was a good car. He shot me a price, then kept lowering it. Finally I could not refuse, and bought it. We became good friends.

We got Sunfish just by stopping and asking about it. The husband (original owner) told he he had turned down many offers of $5000 for it, and I offered him a standing offer of $2500 should he ever want to sell. I didn't even get home and there was already a message on my "answering machine" (it was way back in 2001) accepting my offer, and telling me they talked it over and knew it would be going to a good home. We still stop there and show them what we've done to the car, and they love to come out and sit in it and take pics of each other in it and tell stories about it.

Never would've happened if I hadn't asked!! Geof
