hello, i have a 440 low comp slug in my 68 barracuda 4 speeed, its a street car built with fat torsion bars and ideally circuit designated.............i will be getting my tired lump overhauled in next few months heres waht my man said when i mentioned my budget, these are pounds not dollars so you can double it:happy4:, he also does all his own machine work and is very highly regarded here in uk........1500 will get a full rebuild of your motor.

New pistons/rings, either KB Hypers or Forged?
New cam and lifters.
New crank/cam bearings.
New adjustable-rockers/shafts/pushrods.
New larger Stainless valves/springs to match the cam.
New HV-oilpump/driveshaft.
Change from stock rods to Six-pack H/D type.
Re-balance crankshaft for rod pston cahange.
Block may need a re-bore and decking?
Crank may need a re-grind?
Heads will need porting and bronze guides fitted.
Hardened valve seats may need fitting for high mileage use?

Might be some Ali heads up for grabs soon?
Ported Edelbrocks capable of 600hp.

to which my next question is this, eddys save me valuble lbs in my quest to lose front end weight but could they be overkill on a street car also i am running the shumaker headers as i have no intention of chopping the fenderwell, will these restrict the flow if went ally heads and what is 500hp plus like as a road car? many mmany thanks, nathan.

I have never run the Schumakers, but they are well regarded as a well built, very easy to install header. They are also quite small, and will restrict your total engine output some what. If you are looking to be in the 450-500 HP range, I wouldn't worry too much. If you haven't already purchased them, consider TTI's. I have used them twice, and they fit very well, and are a larger tube, longer header, better suited to making HP. You don't have to cut your fenderwells either.

Again and again and again, the ported RPM Edelbrocks will NEVER be too much head for a streetable 440. You can't get the ports so big you won't get bottom end torque.

Case in point, we port Edelbrocks that flow 340+ cfm. Using a 451 stroker, with a big cam over 270 degrees at .050, an Indy single plane intake and a 1140 cfm dominator carburetor, it makes 500 lb-ft of torque from 3500-7500 RPM with a peak of 600 lb-ft of torque. Just imagine how you can shuffle the torque around with a smaller cam and a dual plane intake!

If you can afford the RPM heads, get them!

How much power will the Schumacher Tri Y Headers give up using the heads you mention VS a TTI Long Tube stepped header?

Would he be throwing good $$ after bad keeping the Tri Y's with that set up?

hello there and thankyou for all the help! i am already running the shumackers, have done for several years since did the conversion, my thoughts were these really, if i can get say 400 to 450 hp with my engine overhauled using my heads..... and the shumackers only really work to say 450hp due to their size wouldnt it be a waste of money going ali heads that yes have a potential to flow to 600 or whatever only to be let down by the shumackers? many thanks nathan.

Three comments -
On the rods - IMO, poor choice for any engine that needs to have some steady rpm potential. Stick with LY rods or get a set of aftermarket H beams.
On the heads - Like IQ said - The RPMs were DESIGNED for that type of engine and weight is a huge deal with road racing. If you can't notice a difference with 60lbs at 2' off the ground off the nose you shouldn't be driving that type of car....lol.
On the headers - They are less of a big power robber but they should be considered when chosing the camshaft because they won't add a lot of power on their own.

There are people making over 450 HP with factory cast iron manifolds, the Schumacher headers are a lot better than the factory manifolds.

Yes the link I posted above is not with Schumacher headers, but they will give similar results when compared to iron manifolds or tubing headers.

many many thanks for the input everyone! i think will only be able to go with as far as my budget allows, this probobally not include ally heads however i am leaning towards getting my 906 s reworked, some kb pistons, new cam and fyull balance and see where i am at in a year or so, the weight loss would be real nice with the heads, already gone ali everything else mechanical wise and fiberglass hood and fenders a hell of an improvment.
