DIY Homemade Car lift

-
I don't about wood construction for a lift. I have seen a car or two fall off wooden ramps and dollies. But I could be wrong. I just bought this lift it was used for $600 it runs off 120v and has a 3ton capacity and raises the car just over 48 inches. just my .02 cents

I struck a deal with the owner of the Goodyear $2000 for four lifts. I sold two of them to my friends for $500 each and sold one on Craigslist for $1000 so mine was free. It took a Saturday to remove all the lifts and get them home. One of my friends is limited on space and installed it on his back patio!!

There is a local guy here in Spokane that sells used lifts. Apparently the manufactures dictate what type of lifts are in the dealers so he gets a fresh supply of them on a regular basis. Last I was there he had a 2 post that came out of a Chebby dealer, believe it was rated at 16k. He wanted abut a third of what new one cost.

That is the main reason I got it(for body work), plus its portable and in the down position you can leave a car right over and there is no posts in the way to walk around

Wooden car stands, from the engineers who brought you fine product like these:..

the only thing i see wrong here is that you cant get the beer out of the keg with them holding up the truck

I would not trust my life to HARBOR FREIGHT jack stands.

Seriously? With their reputation for poor quality, you'd cheap out on jack stands and then go wriggling under a car on them?

Harbor Freight is cheap. Don't you be.

My 74 Dart was on stands for close to 2 years on 4 Harbor Freight 6 Ton stands no problems

I bet those guys drank ALL the beer then decided "lets roll some tires down the hill"..........LOL, that's a cool pic!

I got a buddy that uses kegs for his stands.
I wasn't going to mention it because all the
crying over wood stands.
Built properly wood stands are safer than
cheap metal stands or cement blocks.
Wood has held up buildings for millenia
and was used in train yards forever.
Almost all heavy trailers use wood floors.

It's really just a question of the right tool for the job. If you're blocking it up for a long term project and don't need to move it you can safely prop it up with just about anything you want to stuff under there, done right. Gets old real quick when you need to raise, lower or move it though.

Why not just a Kwik-Lift?
I have one its great gets you 2 feet off the ground and can raise the back after car is on and it sits level or keep it down
Bought it used for 600 and made the ramp extensions to make the transition more smooth and I am goin to cut the 2x12 to match the angle of the metal screwed to it

actually i was thinking more 1x use kinda thing. Need to get it off the ground farther so I can get in and weld. The car will not be stored on these.

Lift is a good investment but i still like a secondary support lifes laws. Anything that can break will. And if my kids come in and start playing with stuff they shouldnt be there is a back up of sorts. I saw a guy that lost part of his skull and lots of stitches on his face when his fell and no backup. That did it for me. just my 2 cents

Beware a hydrolic hose on that scissor lift. I cant say for sure its identical to the one at a place were I worked. It sure looks the same. The hose was replaced about once per year. The lift did get a lot of use in a tire stores first bay.
