what is best breakin oil for new motor?

-
SHELL rotella 15w40 and maybe ad a shot of zinc additive that what i used but any oil with the proper amount of zinc should be fine

I have always broke mine in on the oil I intend to run, Mobil 1, by the time I have the valves set and its loaded on the trailer its broke in.

the rotella has the zinc cut way back too. its only the old bottles that still have the high levels of zinc. I am breaking my engine in this coming weekend and just picked up some of the brad penn break in oil. it is designed specifically for cam break in. it was only 6 bucks a quart. i would pay 20 bucks a quart if that is what it cost. now is not the time to cheap out on the break in oil and lube. it could cost you a rebuild. i spoke with several race engine shops in my area and 2 of the 3 recommended this specific oil. most speed shops carry it. that is just my two cents. i have also read that too much zinc in the oil is a bad thing. if you run a high zinc oil along with a zinc additive it can be detrimental. wish you the best of luck my friend. starting a new engine has to be one of the best feelings in the world.

Go with what type your camshaft manufacturer recommends and a weight based on your engine clearances and oiling system design.

I believe Hughes Engines recommends Joe Gibbs break in oil specifically. Of course others are good as well, but they are probably buds and more importantly Hughes knows that if a person uses Joe Gibbs break in oil, that potential failure point (issue) is out of the question.

Also, Hughes has a better solution to the zddp issue:

I use valvoline vr1 10/30 with a bottle of comp break in lube. Has always had great luck. Then VR1 on every oil change and no problems on any of my motors (Oil Related) lol.

Bradd Penn...they have a special blend for breaking in..not just regular high zinc..made specifically for flat tappett cams
