So, a friend says '89-'98 Dodge motors used about the same starters, a mini? I'm told these will bolt up to my 318? Anyone know for sure? Didn't wanna grab one and have more parts layin around.

Yep! I took my old starter to the parts store and had them pull a 97 Dakota starter and the drive end looked the same. I had to split the electrical connector to be able to hook both wires up. It works great except it doesn't have the original Chrysler starter noise. LOL tmm

Cool, thanks guys. And I won't miss the sound of the old one which was the sound of "struggle". Lol

Ring ding ding ding ding ding ding! lol

more like rawr rawr rawr, the sound of gear reduction lol, can always tell a chrysler when you hear one!

mini starters are good and bolt right on

I'm keeping my old starters, 'cause I LIKE the sound.
Brings back memories of when that sound was followed by the groundshaking roar of a race hemi, about ready to light up the win light at the far end of the strip.

After I put headers on my son's '83 W150, the stock starter rubbed on the headers. With info from this site, I went to Autozone and asked for a stock starter for a '92 Dakota with a V6(3.9?). It bolted in, and no problems for over a year. Good Stuff.

I think mine was for a 91-94 dodge van. my stock wires plugged rite in. More power and I can change it without removing my headers!

Funny- Years ago my Jewish bro in law named Bernstein said they sound like they go:
Jew Jew Jew Jew Jew Rabbi!

I still hear that when I start it. Has struck me funny for 35 years. I don't even know why...

I have one on my truck off a '93 Dakota. I hate the old starter noise. When you car didnt start first shot, you got this noise of disappointment being rubbed in.

Just want to put it out there, but I snagged a starter off of a 94 Ram B250 and the teeth were sliiiightly too small to kick over my flywheel. Swapped it in as a core at Autozone for a 91 Dakota 318 starter and that one works great.

But why, pray tell, wouldn't your car start on the first shot??
Deferred maintenance?

Replaced the distributor so spark timing wasn't close. That's been the only time. Other than when my genius kicked in and I left my coil wire off. :toothy10: live and learn.

starter drive was wore out then because there all the same gear pattern right into the 4.7's in 2002

A junkyard one is much cheaper and maybe more reliable than many rebuilt ones. I grabbed the wire harness too. Look for V-8's thru the Magnum motors (trucks until ~2000) or the (rarer) V-6 Magnums. Fits any cars here from slant to RB, and no more pinched fingers and strained muscles trying to work the older heavy beast into place.

The old style Mopar starter sound is so unique that Billy Gibbons used it in the opening of ZZ Tops Manic Mechanic song. Allegedly, they pulled the coil wire off a slant six to record the sound.

I stole my mini-starter off my 94 Ram van and put the big starter in the van cause there was lots of room. In any case the little starter is now in the 318 in the Barracuda and I have room to work on it. No problem with either one.
