That is what I was thinking about when I asked about space between the finish panel and the trunk lid. I have a feeling that is a really tight space and that may be why the factory peened them.
I guess easy to tell would be to put the panel on with a couple nuts, or hold it on, and push the emblem through with nothing there and see if it goes in all the way or bottoms out? those clips you posted last would like work fine JB wouldn't be necessary with those. They do hold pretty firm.
