It's called a suregrip unit. Also if its just the unit itself, it will bolt into the either of the 741,742,489. If I were you I'd look for a clutch type unit.

Sorry, I said 7 mopar Mary's so I think I'm good! The only lingo I've known for the past 10 years of owning my dart is one peeler squeeler or one tire fire. All I know is I need em both movin!

Mopar Mary's are good, but you can truly repent by going to you first post, hitting "edit", then choosing "go advanced" and changing the title to Sure Grip!! :D:D This "may" save further embarrassment.

send a pm to ceaser he is the guy selling dana parts he can help. He is on Abody and Big Block dart

JUST GO AND BUY A NEW ONE !!!! and Save your self a bunch of aggravation and what if's.

Clutch type can be rebuilt when the friction material wears out for the cost of new clutches and steels. Cone type can be rebuilt but is an involved process that costs almost as much a new one....

Oh boy, someone used the p-word.....:happy1:

I don't understand why people hassle folks about calling a limited slip or sure gipr posi- let it go- It is a generic term that has always been used - not just for GM cars- Everyone knows what the guy is looking for. We get it- now give it up.
Reminds me about a mag I formerly subscribed to that that always comments about not having black out treatment behind the grill of Mopars...

Relax man, everyone is just yanking his chain.

On a side note: Ma Mopar DID refer to the unit as "limited slip" or "suregrip".

exactly- do the guys that complain about 'posi' ever call use the words 'kleenex', 'bandaid', 'aspirin', 'thermos', etc, when actually using something made by someone else? Probably.

It's called "yanking a guys chain". Maybe not everyone but I think most guys do it in jest, me included. If a guy can't take a joke he shouldn't be on the internet cause your susceptible to ridicule a lot worse than someone correcting terms you use. Go on any GM board and post a want ad asking for a sure grip and see what the GM guys say. You'll be lucky if they don't track you down and give ya a blanket party.

BTW: Posi is not really a generic term. Each company had a moniker for their limited slip differential. "posi" was used by GM, "traction lock" was used by Ford, Twin grip was used by AMC, and Sure-grip only used by Mopar.

When I bought my dodge the salesman told me it had a Posi. Slang for (Positive traction differential). I knew what he ment. The discription actually was Anti-spin diferential.

It is only the purest nit wits who always make a big deal of those who uses a slang to describe what they believe is correct.

I always here that term Posi its what the world under stands. Real Mechanics know what they mean . (Clutch style posi) or (Cone style posi) . Just saying??

So I found a sure grip that I wanna get but is there anything I should know first? It's a clutch style and a 30 spline unit. I also want to put new gears in it cause as of now I am running the stock gears, I believe they are 2.76's or somewhere around there. I was wondering what gear you guys think would be good? I drive to the coast a lot during the summer so I don't want anything too short. I use to have 3.91's and it was a nightmare above 50 mph. I was thinking 3.23's, what do you think? Thanks -kory

3:23's would be a good choice. I run 3:55's myself and they aren't bad. You also need to consider your rear tire height as well. Shorter tire will make them seem like a shorter gear, taller tire will make them seem taller.

If you run a short tire( and I'm guessing in an early Dart that you do) and you drive the highway more often than not you might want to look for a 2.94 out of an Imperial. They are still low enough for good take off but tall enough that you don't have that engine drone at high speeds. I have a 1970 340 Swinger and with 3.23 and the original 14 inch tire(about 28 inches tall) it would seem like I was always pushing it at highway speeds, not the rpm range that the engine desired. With 2.94 it would cruise 65-70 all day without the noise and extra fuel consumption. If you fancy yourself a stoplight racer then stick with the 3.23.
