4.56s on the steet ?

Do you plan on driving any where? More importantly at freeway speeds?

Because I'm in college an can't afford a good posi and gear chuck for my car and 425$ didn't seam that bad :( if some one wanted too sell me a better one it would be a god sent:)

Can you afford a few hundred for a 8.8 swap? Do you have a welder? You should check into that.

Ok, be prepared to pay excessively then. Remember, mopar doesn't care about you. Their motto: "Sworn to fun, loyal to none."

So are you saying you are buying a center section with those gears? If so you can always change the ring and pinion out.

If you can't afford a more street friendly gear set how will you afford the cost of driving 4.56s all the time?

If your car has a 4 speed now, don't shift out of second gear. If you have an automatic, leave it in first. Drive to school that way for a few days. No third or fourth on a 4 speed, no 2nd and third on an automatic. Try driving 55-60 miles per hour in first or second for an extended period of time. That's what 456's will feel like in drive or 4th gear.

Your 4 speed will have two gears BELOW second and your automatic will have two gears BELOW first, so you have blinding accelateration (to 50 mph) and you'll be able to pull stumps out of fields, but first or second now is what your drive gear will feel like. (with gas mileage to boot). You'll be able to pull out in 4th or drive but you'll have nothing above that to shift to. 456's are quarter mile drag gears..nothing more.

I love this thread, only because it brings back so many memories. Where I got started in the DC area in the early/mid 70's, that was a entry level gear if you were anybody on the street.....lol. Didn't have to look far to find 88's & 5.13's either. My neighbor had a Nomad with a roller'd 327, tunnel ram & 5.38's.

Being serious though, I ran 56's with a 27" tire for about a year. It was by no means a daily driver although I had it out 5 or so times a week. Everything was close by and city type roads so it wasn't a big deal. Even the track was only about 30mi away by back roads. I can tell you that anything over about 50mph for any period of time will get on your nerves quickly.

Oh, and 105 octane pump gas was only 35/40 cents a gallon back then.

no way on 4.56 for street use. 3.91 max for street use and 4.10 with a four speed

I'm getting a case of Deja Vu too! I was a kid looking for a set of 355s and the local drag racer sold me 456's. That was the last time it was a daily driver. It was a fun "around the block" car, but I had to buy a second beater to drive to work!

In the late 70s, I drove my cuda with 4.56's as a daily driver/ family car for 3 years.
my wife learned how to drive with the aid of the cuda. still drives it to this day, when I let her. get yourself a cheap daily driver, fuel saving car and save the mopar for perfect days. nothing like low gears on the street. they are flat out fun.

OK I get the point but this car only will see the high way twice a month and normally is relegated to back road driving and at most a 30 to40 mile trip the car is and auto with a built 340 and 2800 stall converter but I was hoping for the ability to have a working posi because mine is dead in the water but I need help getting the proper diff for the car

What rearend do you have now, you didn't say?

Don't mean to be any more of an *** then I already have been, since your hardcore Mopar all the way, it's a Sure-Grip. Posi is Chevy. LSD is Ford. Ever thought of rebuilding the unit?

OK sorry but as you have notice I suck at typing its just easier for me to type posi instead of sure grip

Its 1969-70 I have a 65 Satellite 426 street wedge 4 spd. 4.56s.My only transportation. It was alot of fun.But chevron custom supreme was only 32 cents a gal. Go for it,Kevin.

Again, before you spend any money, all you have to do is drive the entire 40 mile trip everyday in low gear. Don't shift. It's a free test to see if you'll like low gears!
Do it for a week. Try it down the highway for that "twice a month" it'll be used there. If you can live with the engine taching like that, you'll love 456s because that's what the drive gear will feel like all the time.
