4.56s on the steet ?

If I remember correctly, you got a pretty stout engine. That 2 series gear does have to go at some point so you can enjoy it. A 3.91 really is the best compromise for a hot street car, imo.

you guys are no fun, you must be old like me. yea it was the 70s and premium was 35cents and real chevells, camaros, novas, goats,442,buicks and few others were roaming. I sure miss those days.

If you want to see what 391s will feel like, drive the 40 mile trip using only first and SECOND gear. Driving your car in 2nd gear is what 391's will feel like in third. Driving in FIRST is what 456s will feel like in 3rd.

I love this thread, only because it brings back so many memories. Where I got started in the DC area in the early/mid 70's, that was a entry level gear if you were anybody on the street.....lol. Didn't have to look far to find 88's & 5.13's either. My neighbor had a Nomad with a roller'd 327, tunnel ram & 5.38's.

Being serious though, I ran 56's with a 27" tire for about a year. It was by no means a daily driver although I had it out 5 or so times a week. Everything was close by and city type roads so it wasn't a big deal. Even the track was only about 30mi away by back roads. I can tell you that anything over about 50mph for any period of time will get on your nerves quickly.

Oh, and 105 octane pump gas was only 35/40 cents a gallon back then.
hey rick, was that back when you could get your license at 12 years old? lol cup of coffee a nickel?:poke:

How much do you have to spend? A 3.23 gear, while not the absolute best perf. gear would be a nice compromise between where your at now and 4.56's. I've got a good 3.23 geared 489 chunk (non sure-grip but that could be easily fixed) I won't be using and would let go real cheap. PM me if interested.

I would hold out for a different center section. I had 4.11s in my street car and like someone said above it got really old real quick. I bought a used sure grip unit from a member on here with 3.23 gears and axles for around $450. Hold out and you will find something.

What size tire are you running? Unless you're running a 30+ inch tire, i wouldn't run 4.565's my self. 4.11's is the highest I would go with a 4-speed and 3.91's is the highest with an auto.

If the area you are driving in primarily 35-45mph speed limits with the occasional stretch at 55mph they are fine. If you plan to do a lot of highway driving especially over 55mph they are too low. I run them on my car with 29" tires and turn 3100 rpm at 55mph. It's ok for short drives at 55 mph but not something you want to do alot. I'll make 25 mile radius drives to shows and cruises but thats about the limit. Around town 35-45 mph areas they are fine - even fun!!

If you get 4.56 you wont see much highway, maybe from one exit to the next. If your in college go find a 2.76 or 2.94 sure grip out of an old Imperial or New Yorker and stick it in there till you graduate. You have the rest of your life to make stupid mistakes like trying to live with a 4.56 on the street. When I was about 20 I ran 5.86's in my street car and it was a long 3 mile drive to my cruise spot and back home. It was fun while street racing but gas then was .50 cents.

Again, I ran 456s for a brief time as a kid. One other thing that no one has posted here is that with 456s you will lose every race on the street. 456s are for straight line zero to 100mph drag racing. If you are sitting at a stoplight and the race ends in 1/4 mile, you are KING. But most "street racing" is done for more than 1/4 mile and many times from a "rolling start".

Personally I enjoy pulling the car into second at 30-50 mph and smoking by some guy with a newer car. That kind of race can go for a couple of miles. With 456s (or even 391s)unless you have overdrive, you lose that high speed street race in two minutes flat. YOu will be revving 6 grand while the other guy pulls out on you like you were standing still.

I once bought an SS with 88's. Filled it up and went home. Had just enough fuel to get back to the station. If you are racing, the race is over for you before the other guy gets started. I put a lot of 454's to shame with that 396. You could buy the college with the fuel you put in it.

Hold on to your money untill you find a set of something in the 3s .
It will turn up. A set of 3.55 would be real good all around gear.
Don't be in a rush or you will be disappointed.

It all goes back to tire size, if you have a Dart and that usually equals short tires, stick with something 3.23 or less. If you run tall tires you can get away with a 3.55 or 3.91. I had 3.23 in my 70 340 swinger with stock tires on rallies and believe me on a 100 mile trip down the interstate they got old.

Nobody gave rpm examples. I had a 383 GTS 4 speed Dart with 4:30 gears and a 26 in tire in high school. At 50 mph I tached 3k. My brother had a 383 RR auto with 4:10s that tached 3k at 60mph. I knew a guy with a Z28 that had same tire, auto and 4:56 that said he tached 3k at 45mph. 3:23s tach around 2700 at 70mph. Think about how much gas you are going to burn at that rate and how long it will take you to save up the extra cash to buy a 3:55. If you are just driving close, go for the 56s. I rarely went more than 10 miles from home with the 30s. I see guys on here sell 3:23s and 3:55s for around 4 to 500 all the time, so give that some thought. I think shipping is around 75.

i found 3.91s with a clutch type shuregrip in 489 case from my new budy for 350

sounds about right- when I had the 340 in my duster with the 4.10s, 85 mph was around 4500 rpm, and that was about the fastest I liked to cruise at. And the top-end of 110 or so came right at the quarter mile mark, so they worked out perfectly.

Those gears with a stock 1979 360, a little less fun lol.
