For the longest time my wife kept our dogs off the furniture. As Queenie, our Cattle dog has aged, Ernie has backed off. Queenie now gets invited onto the bed at lights out and is invited back up first thing in the morning. She spends an hour or so on one of our laps when we watch tv at night. So whats the deal with you folks, do you allow your four legged kids on the furniture??

We don't even let our dog on the carpet! (German Shepherd) She can stay on the kitchen tile floor on some cardboard, near the sliding glass door, during the winter months when it's in the 20's~30's outside at night.

We have a Lab and a Boxer. The boxer came from or daughter who moved into a townhouse with very little yard. The lab we rescued from the pound so the other had company. I have had a lot of dogs in my life and never let them on the furniture until these two. My daughter had already let the boxer on furniture and as much as I tried my wife allowed it so I gave up. Both dogs sleep with us too and think they are lap dogs. The lab has turned into a big baby since he had back surgery last year he lays in my lap for hours. What can I say guess I am getting soft in my old age.

My 2, pitbull and sharpei have their own blanket and they know that they have to be invited onto the furniture..

My wife spent 45 minutes cleaning our couch and love seat. Because of the hair left behind by our dog she banned him off our furniture. King is my 2nd best friend and he can't lay beside me on the sofa and it's killing both of us.

Run of the house, but off the furniture...except...every Doberman we've ever had would sit on the couch...just walk up and sit their rear on the couch, front legs on the ground, and look at you like, "Well, I'm doin' it just the way you do." Just cant tell them not to do that. ;-)

Our Yorkies have their special spots sitting beside us on the recliners.

LOL, our dogs have their own recliners. We keep a blanket in all three chairs so they don't leave hair on them.

Our bird dog won't even get up in the chair unless the blanket is there, he just stands there and looks at us until one of us gets the blanket and puts it back in the chair.

That is great you need to post a picture of your Doberman doing that.

She's still just a pup now, and will soon be too big to get on the bed, but I took this one last night...

She lays on the floor beside the sofa most of the time.

When our husky "followed my son home" I told him she's not sleeping on the bed. That night where did she sleep...my bed. She lays on a sheet on the couch.

They are called lap dogs for a reason.
I think people should know that dogs are different and have different needs.
Some are vicious. Some will lick you to death.
If people had more sense, some dogs would have more freedom.

Someone recently had a post here of his husky that wanted to stay outside in the snow. The busy body neighbors reported him. The dog was fine.
I have Chihuahuas that never go outside. The house is their world and they are perfectly happy to stay inside with people and shake.
But they don’t get on furniture except in a lap.

Cats yes, dogs no.

Cats obsessively clean themselves, so they're fine. Dogs roll in **** then bring it inside and don't give a damn, so NOPE.

We had two Dobies when I was a kid that did this. Cracked me up every time.

Both of mine have run of the house. At first I wasn't going to let them on the couches because they are leather, but we also have Jack Russel that is allowed on the couch. This caused a lot of jealousy and rebellion amongst my 2 Pit mixes. So no they are allowed on the couches and are respectful about it.

The last photo is one of my favorites.

Dogs are part of the family and in my home they are treated as such,my catahoola is allowed on any furniture and she sleeps in our bed. I adopted her at 3 months old, she contracted addisons disease at about a year old, she gets DOCP shots every 7 weeks to keep everything in check [to keep her alive] she is my wife and my best friend she's 9 now and we know sooner or later she'll be gone but till then we'll spoil her!!!

I saw that post and thought "Gees, that dog loves the snow"
Mine used to sleep under it.

Then I thought of this when I saw the picture.

Sassy (Aussie Shepard/Beagle mix) has her bed in the basement, but she's rarely on the furniture. When she's upstairs she usually sitting or sleeping at my feet as I sit on the couch.

Dozer (Basset/Beagle mix) has bed is in his cage next to my bed. When it's bed time he goes in his cage and lays down for the night. Usually, though, he's either beside me on the couch or on the floor at my feet.

The cats come and go as they please. On the bed, on the couch sleeping next to me, cuddling up to me at night, but they mostly prefer the hall closet, sleeping on the extra blankets.

Truthfully, Dozer's been a godsend over the past months. I don't know how many times I've been sitting here crying and Dozer's always offered his comfort to me by putting his front paws on my leg and licking my face. Even the cat has joined in at those times. My male Maine Coon, Spidey, has done it often, too.

Dozer on one side of me licking my face, Spidey on the other, licking my cheek. That can't happen if they weren't allowed on the furniture. And what a blessing it is, to know our pets are empathic enough to know something's not right and offering me the love and comfort they have.
