Ok, I got a new 5" monster tach with shift light and obviously it is to large to mount on the steering column, but I hate when I see guys hack up dash pads, and drill holes in top of the dash area, so here is what I came up with. I fabbed this up yesterday, and mounted my tach. The wires run through the tubeing. It mounts with two existing holes under the dash. What does everybody think??

I think it looks cool... does that tubing get in your way at all? Me, I went the A-pillar route... but I like yours as well..

no, it's well out of the way of everything...even the radio knobs. I'm thinking about putting the wiring on a 4 pin plug and then be able to remove it easily if I don't want it in there for car shows....

looks cool there.. had I not gone the a-pillar route, I would probably steal this idea LOL ..

I dun no, I think I kinda like the interior of the car, to look a little more un-cluttered for shows...not really sure yet. LOL!

Speedracer, do you find the piller mounting of your tach blocking your vision much?? I thought about doing the same as you, but I thought my wife would hate driving my car ( she drives it to car shows and cruise nites for me when I drive the superbird) with it mounted there, blocking her vision.

You would think that giant tach would block your view there, but honestly it doesnt.. My friend had his there, and I always thought he was crazy for putting it there, so one day he told me to sit in the car, and see for myself.. I did, and I was sold from that moment on... I knew then thats where mine was gonna go.. LOL ..

However, if there is one drawback, look where that shift light sits in my pic... if your driving at night, I found its best to not pound on it and get that light to light up.. cause at that angle in the dark, when it lights... you cant see... scared the crap out of me the first time it happened at night... I really have to find a cover for the light

ok good to know, thanks...I like your car too! I want to see more pics of it!!! How about putting your shift light on a switch, if you can't find a cover?

Thanks.. I appreciate that... if you click the link in my signiture, that will take you to the buggy build thread.. if you dont feel like reading it all, just go right to page 15 and scroll down a little.. bunch of pics of it last May when I brought her back out after 2 years of work.. Hope you like it..

I wanna see more pics of your cars.. both of them LOL

cool, I will definitly check it out ! I have a thread for the duster restoration in the members restoration area, on about the 5th or 6th page, called "The 12 month mark"

Had a truck wit a cage in it years ago, the tach, oil pressure & water temperature gauges were all mounted to the tube by the a-pillar with stuff that Autometer carried. Were visible without being to much in the way....

Here's what I fabricated. bracket slips under back side of dash leaving dash pad untouched. still need to covers wires though.

I took a dash pad off a Dart with the tach mounted to the pillar. The tach had laid against the pad and left an indention over the years, so you may want to make sure that tack isn't resting on the pad. Mines a nice spare pad for my 68s and it still has that indention after almost 10 years of sitting.

here is mine. dash pad not touched.

Good to know and thanks for the heads up, I will double check that its not sitting on the pad. I had made it so it JUST slids over, but I'm going to chek it again and adjust it if needed.

Mine is touching the pad (barely) but thats ok... im cool with it.. (I also have a spare dash pad around here somewhere lol)

Neat idea but it sure is over to the right far, idea of a tach is to keep it close to the driver so you don't have to take your eyes off the road much. That tach is petty big too, why not get a smaller one? Do you need a shift light? how about installing one in your Rallye dash cluster?

I wasn't a big fan of the tube (looks cluttered) but like the idea that you can remove it for car shows, that is slick. What you have looks like it should be for a race car and a little outta place in yours, I think your car looks awesome in the original condition :glasses7:

Hope I didn't hurt any feelings, it is nice to see new ways to mount tachs without damaging the original parts 8)

LOL... for me, I went with the big tach because bigger is better right?? LMAO .. That and I got it nice and cheap.... as for the 'damaging original parts' guess I am guilty of that as well.. we cut the a-pillar molding in order for the tach to mount properly to the pillar... Didnt bother me though, my car was not a factory 340 car or big block car.. it was just a plain jane grandma grocery getter... and I dont intend to part with it.. so I am of the 'make it how I want it' mindset LOL ... Looking back, as cool as the monster tach is, I probably coulda gone with a smaller one... but since Mr Norm signed it, I had to put it in the car LOL
