So, I bought my Duster with a 390hp 360 crate in it and am trying to get it all dialed in correctly. The distributor looks to tall, the number 5 wire hits the lower bolt of the wiper motor when advancing the timing... Looking at the part # on the dizzy its PN - 8589 MSD Pro-Billet, looking it up this appears to be chevy distributor... Should this even work?

Now ive heard alot of ***ked up mods before but this has got to top the cake. Although if it will work, I know chevy parts are very cheap to buy......

Considering there should not be a gear on it at the bottom for mopars I don't see how it could be a chevy distributor. Are you sure they didn't swap out the internals into a chevy housing?

Sounds like a DUI set up. I put one in my car and love it.

Completely different gears. Check again. The keyway into mopar is a hex, chevy is slotted.

It IS possible that someone shortened a Chev dist, added a bushing for the mounting hole. I used to have a 'Vette breakerless (pre HEI) mechanical tach drive

But Google at my house says it fits a Holden "whatever that is."

Holden and H.E.I make those types of dizzys, and can be built to specs using the same parts and caps for different name cars....its how they save $$
the internals are the only things different..

No gear on the end.. And i'm not sure if they did swap the housing, perhaps. the PO did lots of 'questionable' things on this car.
I was looking at this link that made me think its a chevy dizzy. I'll get pics in a bit..

ha okay..I just went out an snapped a couple of it in the car..
theres 3 wires, so I think its a 'ready to run' that is hooked up to a 6al. It does look too tall doesn't it?

Offhand I'd say the label is wrong. If there is no separate piece to adapt the housing to the SB Mopar it's just about got to be a "dedicated" "for Mopar SB" piece

That appears to be a MSD 8534 billet distributor for a Mopar SB.
It looks tall because like a Chevy, the advance mechanism is directly below the rotor and it uses a Chevy style tall cap, note the cap attachments. If you look closely, you'll see that the distributor body is shallow compared to a Mopar. I haven't measured, but I doubt that the over all height, when installed is much taller than a Mopar.

Sorry, so what you're saying is the round piece with the rubber o ring that seals the unit to the block is mopar specific? I agree its probably labeled wrong, or the number only corresponds to the housing. Now heres a thought. Could the wires be hitting the wiper motor bolt because my engine is not offset to the passenger side enough? Oh yeah, and when I try to grab the top of dizzy to spin it while the motors running I get zapped from time to time. I'm thinking it because of bolt wearing a thin spot in the top of the plug wires ( i'ved swapped the # 5 wire with the # 1 wire over time) time for new wires right?

I can't see well enough in your photos. NORMALLY the "part that fits the block" "IS" the entire distributor housing, like so:

If that is "the case" pun intended, then the label must be incorrect.

However if it's a separate piece down near the block, then someone MUST have taken that Holden distributor and machined the case and shaft, as well as machined a mount bushing.

Years ago, when I adapted the 'Vette distributor, I took a junk Mopar case like in the photo, sawed the bottom off, and machined a hole in the middle to fit the Chev distributor mount flange. Then we cut off the Chev distributor case, shorted and tanged the shaft end to fit Mopar

If this has been done, you should be able to see it easily.

If not, it simply has the incorrect part no. on the label.......

Be glad you don't have one of these big honken things.

I have one of those big honken things and in two years I haven't had an ignition problem on the 360. I guess it's all how you look at things, simple hookup, no extra coil, no extra wires, no thingies hanging on the firewall and no problemo's

Isn't Holden the Aussie car manufacturer for GM?
