currently working on a 1970 Duster and switching from a 6cyl/3-speed to a 383/4speed. there is key removal lockout linkage hooked to the reverse spragg on the transmission and to the steering column (like automatic column linkage). It allows for key removal/turning on only when the shifter is in the reverse position. I have never seen this before.

any thoughts on what I need to do.... other than not hooking up the linkage, to defeat this and allow the key to turn without the trans in reverse

just throwing this out their, maybe some thing fab to the E brake handle. when you pull it out, it moves the column over so you can remove the key. just a fast thought.

Have a 70, but ripped that out in 71, been a long time. Seems there is a switch under the dash, to the clutch pedal, or the rod going to the steering lock on the column, in the engine bay. It's not on the shifter itself. Can't remember at 62 years old.Seems like it was with the steering wheel lock, not in the column. it was easy to defeat. Sorry, but a little switch ,in plain sight.

Thinking further; un-hooked the rods, from column to trans. Pulled the column lever up, in the bay, so steering wouldn't lock, and welded/wired it there.

Having owned a real early 70 340 4 sd Duster that didn't have this function. I can tell you first hand why it is there. I blew a clutch/flywheel and when I reached up and turned the key off to kill the engine, it locked the steering wheel and I then ran off the road into a deep ditch! Later on in 70 they added that feature. I'm fairly certain there was a rod that ran off the reverse lever on the trans to a lever on the column that turned the collar on the steering column which in turn allowed you to turn the key to the lock position and remove the key.

i think he trying to think of way to use it without going to trans linkage.
