PayPal safe?

That Western Union thing makes it stinky for sure..

Get him to deal with the shipper directly,, perhaps by paypal...

Paypal can't take money out of an empty account,, so as soon as you get notice money's there,, transfer it out..

then who-ever,, - has to start a legal action, which will discourage anything but a legit beef.. same as if he paid you cash,.. imho

The reason he wants to send me PayPal is he is in the Military and out to sea right now.Now I got a email that the transport company only takes Western Union and he wants to send me $950.00 extra and then have me send the $950.00 to the transport company for him.Maybe I should ask if he could do a Bank wire transfer instead?Or send me a deposit Pay Pal and I will keep the car for him.

Jim

Classic scam... Google it.

Yes!.....sounds super scammy to me too!! I've even heard a lot of scammers use that "I'm in the military" line and try to do a Western Union deal.

What I would do is.....have him send a personal check or cashier's check in the mail, take it to your bank and let it sit there for about 5 days to make sure it clears. He knows where you are, he knows your bank. There's really not much of a risk on his part. There's definitely no rush here.....he's at sea, right? LOL

This sound a bit familar?

"CAR FOR SALE

I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem
with the picking up,I got an email from my agent..i taught i included

schedule a pick up time ,and my pick up agent head quarters is in the
United Kingdom and all commission payments made for pick up, from
anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in the Uk and the
only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and
i tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didn't
bring along, and there is no post office(there is usually a western

offshore! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i
will include the $900 they charged to pick it up and take it my
home(1st class treatment), to the payments i will send through paypal

He wants to have the car picked up with a shipping co.Man I do not know what to do now doesn't sound to safe.

SCAM!
I just sold my Dart Sport to a A-body member.
Cancelled the Craigslist ad.
Recieved an email from a someone wanting to know if the car was still available & final asking price.
Thought it was a scam, so I told them it was still for sale & the price was $150,000.00.
He said that was okay, but was out of the country & if I would provide my information, he would pay me through PayPal.
He would send a transport truck after the money is in my account.
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I know when I'm being scammed.
No one pays 150K sight unseen for anything.
There was a story on the local news about people being paid & the money showing up in there accounts. The check that was deposited came back insufficiate & leaving the person on the hook for the bad check, transfer, etc.
I have used PayPal for buying & selling parts.
Only got burned one time in the last 8-years.
I had sold a heater box assembly, shipped it with the carrier the customer preferred (cheapest) to Canada.
The person filed a dispute thru PayPal, stating that it had been damaged during shipping.
I had told him since he selected the carrier, that I would not be responsible for condition.
He was ok with that at the time of the purchase.
Well, I didn't get paid & I didn't get the damaged part back.
I guess my question is, since I never recieved pics of the damage & PayPal returned his money, maybe it was a scam?
With P/P the burden of proof was on the seller, not the buyer.
I still use P/P, but I check my balances often.

Now he made Payment to my Pay Pal but there is a hold on it until I send $950.00 via Western Union to his shipper.

Yes this is a scam,no way I am doing that....................

Thanks Again,

Was that in an email? Log in DIRECTLY to your PayPal account and take a look. Call PayPal and let them know what is going on.

Yep, stinks bad.. , Just wait, time is on your side.. if he wants it bad enuff,, he'll make other arrangements..

He's probably not trying to scam you out of the car, just the $950. His payment will be bogus but the $950 you send the "transport company" will be real.
It is possible to be real, I was in the Navy and could imagine buying the right car when deployed. How many plumb crazy 71 Roadrunners are for sale out there? Many service guys wait to re-enlist and get a big bonus check till they are in a hostile fire zone because the whole bonus is tax free then. It should be easy for the guy to come up with a family member or friend to help him out back home to help him. Paypal would not be the most common way to run this scam, it takes real money on the line with Paypal. Usually they would use counterfeit money orders, the bank will accept them and give you cash, but a few days later will come back to YOU saying it is no good and look to YOU to pay back the money. Personally I think that is crap, if the bank took it they should ensure it is real before giving you cash, heck they are a bank, they should be able to tell if something is legit in a few minutes.

Google "PayPal Western Union" and you will see that it is a very common PayPal scam.

You definately need to get PayPal into this thing.

I use Paypal but don't like it. What Ebay and Paypal are up to should be illegal.

I am an IT guy in my other life(from here). This is a scam. I doubt PayPal will help you. Just back away from this "deal'. It is only a deal for the buyer.

Find another buyer. Too many wacky things going on. And a car such as that will sell to someone anyway. If you are hearing warning bells already, I guarantee you that you need to listen to them. That is a car that won't stay for sale long. I'd wait for a legitimate buyer.

Maybe I got lucky. I sold my 67 for $9,200 on ebay and was paid thru paypal. The buyer paid a hauling company direct and they picked it up. No problem.

Thanks Again,

Have him paypal the money to the shipper and have the shipper bring you cash.

then sell it to the shiper.

It will never happen but it would be fun to see what the scammer says to that.

Every time ive sold a car for more than a few hundred, I make them come to the bank with me. That way the bank can verify the cash isnt fake, and there is video survalence incase the bank screws up and accepts fake cash. Ive only had one person refuse to meet me at the bank to buy sign over ownership. Cover your own ***, because nobody else is worried enough to do it for you.

This is a scam. I've had several offers to buy cars from someone "out to sea" that "must use PayPal", and is ready to buy no questions asked, willing to pay more for my troubles, etc. etc. If you read the text carefully you can usually pick out that English is also not their native tongue.. Do not fall for it!!

Jim on his last email to you, right click go to properties then click details look for his IP address and Google it to see where it originated. You can also find out who their Internet service provider is.

Ahh yes a definite scam! I had a similar situation selling a diamond engagement ring. Person wanted me to ship it someone else but they would pay for it and extra for my time. I called Paypal thinking this should be ok if its sent through Paypal. They told me that if he disputes the transaction, saying he didn't receive the item, then i would be charged back the funds I received.

Paypal is a joke when they say its safe and secure. Actually for the fee they charge for receiving funds they can kiss my a$$.

Another concern.
Did you know that a Bank Certified check can be cancelled?
My buddy is a banker. I asked his advice when I sold my Race Car in 1995.
The guy was going to bring a Certified check & I insisted on cash or no deal.
He was coming from California to Oklahoma.
Looking back, I guess the cash could have been conterfiet.
Now that I know the guy, we stay in touch & talk at least once a year, I should have taken a personal check from him. Oh well, you just never know.

That sir, is great info to know. I didn't know that was possible.
