Picked up a Mopar crate that was advertised as new and it does appear unused. Seller states its a 380hp version. The yellow sticker at the rear of the block is unreadable. Serveral questions come to mind. I noticed that the crate motors come with an LA style timing cover. Does this mean that the only thing i need to do to use a mechanical fuel pump is get the cam snout extension? Does this cover mean it has an LA style water pump? The date stamp appears to show its a '92 block....so is this an late LA motor with magnum heads and what does that mean as far as what model crate motor is, i.e. what HP and when it was assembled. It has the M1 dual plane manifold. There are dot style numbers and letters on the front of the block; 3NK 5.9 2842 1 205AC 268. Outside of the 5.9, any ideas? There is a long bolt protruding out of the lower left bolt hole of the timing cover...? Can I use my pulleys, alternator and alternator brackets from my 340? Im trying to avoid taking a head off to see what pistons are in there.

Run your pulleys, yes. The 380 horse crate ,came with a M1 single plane manifold. Also came with a bigger hydraulic roller cam. Specs: .501/.513" lift,230/234 @.050 hydraulic roller. The 300/360 crate came with a dual plane, and a smaller camshaft. I would dial indicate the lift..420-ish,the 300 horse crate ..500" ish the 380. Both the same basic Magnum truck short block. If the 300 h.p. cam,can be reground. Would require custom push rods. You never stated what your expectations are. Under 5500,3:55 gears run it. You will be buying tires more often.

Wanted the 380hp and paid based on that. And the snout extension/water pump?

So what intake is on it? That alone would seem to answer the question.

I'd be willing to bet you have the 300 HP with the dual plane. How much did they get you for? I have the 380 HP version, installed 3 years ago and barely run.

yes, to the cam snout extension if you plan on running a mechanical fuel pump. I would remove the fuel pump block off plate to see if it already has one. Only the LA water pump will work on the LA timing cover.

If it is a dual plane M1 it will look like this:

If it looks like that, then either someone swapped it or you have the 300/320HP version. Early ones were rated 300 HP and later ones were rated 320HP.

I am pretty sure if it have the LA cover on the fron then it will have the fuel pump eccentric on it as well. The engine above is a 320HP version of the Magnum crate engine.

Great write up. Tells ya exactly what to do and what you'll get. IIRC, did the suggested parts to use state a header of 1-3/4?
