Hey all,

i've got a 65 S cuda that i built back in the 90's, with a 5.5 lock-to-lock manual box. i'm also running '68-'70 340 exhaust mainfolds, which is already real close to the steering collar bolt head. i've read all the threads re the FR 1540 box, and have seen that some feel it will direct fit pre-'66 a bodies, but can't find a thread where someone actually did it. just called Flaming river, and tech guy said there must be something different with pre-'66 cars, but he didn't know (???). jegs and summit say '66 and up.

has anyone actually direct fitted one to a pre-'66 a body, or know where someone has? if so, i'd appreciate input on how it went, and whether any mods were needed. from what i've read, the only possible glitch is the spline for the pitman arm, but not the arm itself.

thanks for any advice! Brian

Pretty sure all Mopars from 62+ use the same box.

well i would agree for '63 -'66, but don't want to get one under an assumption. anyone know for sure? hard to believe FRiver would advertise '66 as the cutoff year incorrectly, missing out on 3 yrs of a body sales for no reason...

thanx again

Well on my Borgeson it shows that it fits all Mopar cars from 62-72 with small sector shaft. I replaced the Flaming River box with this box. Yep I would venture to guess you'll be fine.

ALL early A-body Pittman arms are small spline. Also, the early cars had smaller box mounting bolts. So, if the Flaming River box has the small spline sector shaft it will work. I would bush the mounting holes down to the smaller size, but it's not absolutely necessary.
