I bought a 65 dart 273 4 speed last night.....the driveshaft had to be installed as it was towed using a tow dolly.....questions:

1. does the 4 speed have fluids like an auto and if so where do you ck it?

2. Even if you push the clutch to the floor, when stopped its grinding a bit going from reverse , 1st, etc.??? could that be fluid related or maybe clutch adjustment??

The trans has two plugs on the right side with square heads. The lower one is used for draining, the top one is used for filling. Keep adding oil until it starts coming back out the hole and then reinsert the plug. Because the reverse gear does not have a synchro you need to let the shafts stop turning before engaging reverse. Just hold the clutch in for two or three seconds before moving the shift lever into reverse. If your clutch is not fully disengaging it will grind going into first. Watch the tach, it will idle slower in first than in neutral and the car will want to creep forward.

Just make sure you know what kind of fluid is in it before you top it off. Could be ATF could be gear oil, could be syncromesh...
Cuda69 is right on about reverse, mine was always a crunchy gear unless you let it slow down and pull quick into reverse.

Use 80/90 non synthetic gear oil. That's recommended by Passon transmissions and also Mopar muscle magazine. If it has ATF in it. It shouldn't.

X2 on this post by fklskv, I have drove and owned many 3 and 4 speeds in
my 38 years of driving and main tanning my mopars and never have I seen or used ATF in my standard transmission................. I have only used 80/90 gear oil.
We are not talking about a 2000 model Nisson here.

idk when they started but some trucks had ATF in their OD 4 speeds from the factory so they would shift smoothly when it was cold.

I would get a FSM for the car and do some reading.
Put in the oil that the factory recommends.

I have seen/dun service on new 1998 to 2003 Nissons and they did use ATF, but never have I seen it used in 65 dart 273 4 speeds or all the way to 1980, but anything is possible I quess :coffee2:

This is what I would do, I am sure these older transmissions was built to use gear oil :glasses7:

Hi

Here in Canada we often changed the 80/90 gear lube to ATF IF the customer complained about hard shifting in cold weather. As you could imagine we heard that a lot in Canada.
I would never do it to a 4 speed today as no one likely drives these cars in that kind of weather.
Stick with the 80/90.
