ok, my turn for one of these posts ! Today found a '72 scamp around the corner from me. 2dr,ht. rebuilt 318, new holley, elec ignition conversion, new engine wire harness. factory a/c, p/s, p/b and everything is still there ! engine runs good. a/t( assuming 904 ), new wheels / tires. new exhaust system, has new dash pad for car. the car Is from cali and is virtually rust free. no holes anywhere in the body or floors. the guy said its originally a mod top car, but I did some research and could not find any scamp mod tops ??? .... anyway, he said he would let it go for $3000. sound fair ? im not to sure on the scamp market ! it will need paint and a full interior job .

My understanding was that the mod tops were only offered in 69 and 70. It may have had a vinyl roof, but I highly doubt it was a mod top. Perhaps it had the snake skin vinyl roof though. At any rate the price sounds fair, but double check everything the seller is telling you because it sounds like he either doesn't know things about the car, or he is BSing you.

Mom drove a 72 Scamp from new until 1985. I can remember two main issues with the car- rust around the bottom of the vinyl top and a metallic blue paint job that faded and peeled before it was 5 years old. Otherwise it was a great little car. IF the car is complete, runs well, and isn't a rust bucket, $3000 sounds very reasonable. Take a look around that top area- that could be a high priced repair spot.

He doesn't know much about the car other than what he got from previous owner. He has had it for a little over a year and doesn't really have time for 2 cars. It's not advertised for sale, i saw it and stopped to look at it. Turns out he is willing to sell ! As far as the mod top goes, he said he decoded the car and it said it had a flower print vinyl top. I'm going back tonight and will give a much thorough look over.

It is entirely possible that he used a decoder for 69 or 70 cars, and the same code for the mod top was used in 72 for something else. It woulld be cool if it was mod top for sure....

def not mod top avail car or year, but lets see some pics!

The top has been off the car long before he bought it so who knows ! I'm fine with just black top ! .. Does it sound like a fair price at $3K ?

just looked at the fender tag and broadcast sheet. both show "V1Y" which is full vinyl top - gold and green floral .... not sure about "mod top" but it is a factory '72 model floral top car ...

I have the same car, and if you dig into the tears on the drivers seat, you should find the build sheet....I paid 3k for mine and have done a bit of work on it...the one you are looking is great for the price.....I wouldn't let a little rust scare you, but definitely screen the body with a magnet checking for heavy bondo work...I didn't and later found a motorcycle had hit mine in a rear quarter, 3 inches of bondo surprise....
hit me up and I can walk you through fixing your grill for around a $30....budget...
it is a simple fix..

It may be worth what he's asking, but if you are considering buying it, try making an offer of say $2500 and see what happens. You can always offer more if he says no.

thanks, I might just do that ! ... I also considered trying to find a '69 valiant aluminum grill for it, no more plastic breakage !!

I think that's the same car I saw on Mopar trader on Facebook the other day. I think he mentioned it having a late model auto/od in it. Looks pretty decent for the money and the of should help in the mileage department.

This is what I would do. ^^^^^

That looks to be a nice clean car.

Not this car !! Wasn't even for sale when I saw it ... $3K is his absolute bottom price, probably buying tomorrow

You're absolutely right. I was way off. The one I saw was a 73, no scoop, and had a rump stripe. $3k is a good buy in my book. That price up here buys half the car that one is. Enjoy!

Looks like a decent car for the price, especially if the engine was rebuilt & it has all the other new items you mentioned installed.

I have a '71 Scamp with the original vinyl top still on & the rust areas to pay attention to are typical of most Mopars. The wiper pivot seals always leak so the water collects in the foot well areas & rust out the front floors. The wheel lips on the quarters collect dirt & moisture & can rot the outer wheel house with the quarters. The gas tank straps are mounted to the sheet metal in the spare tire well in the trunk & can get soft when rust starts. The bottoms of the fenders, especially the inner brace is another dirt & moisture location that rot the fender bottoms out. The vinyl top mouldings & the top itself can wreak havoc so it's good that the top is gone because it was probably in bad shape.

Looks like you will have a good solid car if you can get it.
