Make sure it's a #8 wire, and put a auto re-setable breaker on the wire at the Batt. You can get those at Napa for $5.00. 40 amp is as big as you can get in the small ones, but there is no draw in that direction, so it will be fine. But if the wire shorts, it will protect it.

I've seen a number of cars use the circuit breaker for protection, I used a short length of fusible link to protect my cable. You should also use the correct double pole battery cut off switch to truly isolate the battery when the shut off is activated.
