Reading all the posts about the iffy mopar ignition modules that are out these days, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to remove the epoxy to see whats going on underneath? I have no idea how complicated they are but I wonder if it's just a couple of cheap electronic components in there causing all the trouble?

Pretty much "can't" I've dissected several to try and perform a "cause and effect" autopsy, with various results. Easy to damage stuff trying to get the pot material out, depending on "what" the potting "is."

If you want to "keep the look" though, you COULD gut one out, and shoehorn a GM 4 pin HEI in the box. My understanding that is it FBO? sells one that is essentially that very thing.

As shown, best you can do is replace the old Mopar electronics with the later GM HEI module. Bypass your ballast resistor, use a better e-core coil, and open you spark gap to 0.045".

To build a more modern one a LM1815 or MAX9924 could be used as the variable reluctance interface, and an ignition IGBT for the coil drive transistor. Add a few resistors, a small transistor, a couple capacitors, yields a circuit superior to the HEI or Mopar boxes. In volume, cost could be about $5. But, the reluctor/pickup coil (VR) and mechanical errors of the OEM mopar distributor, makes it hardly worthwhile in my humble opinion.

Lots of good info. That's pretty cool about installing the HEI inside the box. Wish I would have known about that years ago when I went with HEI on my slant Duster. I think this will be the way I go with my Barracuda now.

The rev-n-ator box looks pretty stock with all new electronics & rev limiter. That's a no-brainer, in my opinion, unless a resto award is what you're after.
